There has been a lot of talk about foregoing HS baseball for summer travel ball on this site. Whether because the school team isnt that good, or the coaching isnt great, etc.  I would like to share a wonderful phone call I just recieved from my son's varsity coach. It may be long. My son has been on varsity since freshman year.  The team has been pretty weak. Many games over the years have been hard to watch.  They have struggled to win a few games a year.  My son is the only one moving on to college ball.  Most kids don't even play travel ball.  The coach called today saying he wanted to call me because if it were his son he would like to hear this.  I am really glad he called.  He said my son came to him during winter workouts and asked if the other players were interested he would like to have some extra practices. The coach asked why and he said I think we can be better, and this is my senior year, an I don't want to go out this way. He said fine, whatever you want to try, go for it.  I noticed they seemed to be having a lot more practices but I didnt know why.  Apparently, my son started running little clinics. He would take kids he thought might be able to pitch and worked with them. Then did the same with infield and outfield. He has them there 2 hours before game time, hitting in the cages. The coach said this has been done all on his own. The coach admitted he had become complacent with the team. Figuring it is what it is and we would never be able to compete. He complimented my sons leadership skills and said he is the most competitve kid he's ever had.  Well season is half over and these kids are playing amazing compared to what they were. They all bought in and have been working their butts off and are having a blast.  My son has decided to have himself a season. Not only on the mound, but with the bat. Something to be said for having your NLI signed and playing with no stress. My son has had 3 articles in the newspaper, they beat the reigning state champs, have  a winning record, and are on the cusp of clinching a playoff spot for the 1st time in I think 15 years. (Hope I didn't jinx them ) Watching him play with his friends and watching him play with pure joy on his face this year is something I wouldn't trade for the world and I'm sure if you asked him, he wouldn't either.

Great story! You must be one proud mama! Best of luck to the team and to your son!

Your son has learned something many people in the business world don't get. Don't whine and complain. Provide a solution to the problem. It's nice to see these kinds of threads versus the "my kid was screwed" and "the high school program is useless" posts. When your son ultimately goes looking for a job what he accomplished is a good story about leadership and accountability.

I am happy for your son. You have every right to be very proud.

It is a great story.  And the kid is entitled to mucho kudos.  Seems like he understands what it takes.  By the coach's own admission, he was complacent with the team. It took a 18 yo "kid" to show him the way.  Hopefully he made an impression and the team will continue to improve when he is at the next level.  Good luck to the "kid."

After re reading my post, it came off a little braggy which was not my intent. .  Although I am very proud of my son, it wasn't really my whole point.  I am just always reading the posts that you are referring to and IMHO  high school ball is still important.  Had he thought he was above this, or my team sucks why bother, he would have missed out on a lot.  Memories with good friends, good lessons in humility, life lessons in general.   Even if they weren't having the great season that they are, I would still feel the same way.  I have a bases clearing bunt story from a few years ago that is so funny I will be telling it at my grandchildren's baseball games.  It just doesn't always have to be about recruiting or playing on the best team. It didn't hurt my son in the least, and may have actually helped him in the long run.

Kudos also to the coach for giving credit to your son, I hope he repeats that story at the teams banquet....  Well after the playoffs end of course.

Where is this fine print you speak of?  I think I did jinx them. They just played their worst game of the year!!!  I should have waited until the season was over to post this!!!

The dreaded HSBBW jinx. My son's soph year in HS he hit 5 HR's and 4 Dbl's in 9 consecutive at bats. I had to post it. Next game he looked like a clown. That fixed me.

Congrats to your son that was an awesome post. He is no doubt a fine young man and a player any coach would be thrilled to have. Don't worry about the jinx it only lasts one game. Unless you post again about it. Lol

Don't worry!  You can lift the jinx!  Throw a tray of ice cubes on the ground and walk around it backwards six times .

Congratulations to your son.  It sounds like he has the right stuff to take him far, not only in baseball, but all aspects of life.

I too almost didn't read because of the title.  I have about 150 quotes that I pull from and post in the dugout as part of an effort to motivate and influence.  Your son's story reflects the message of almost every one of them. Another great read for every new HS player and parent.

Event + Response = Outcome

"Life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react to it.  We are in charge of our attitudes."

Because of your story, I found another quote to add to my list - it is a bit lengthy but I think very worth while...

"...the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude.  It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances or my position.  Attitude keeps me going or cripples my progress.  It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope.  When my attitudes are right, there is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me."  - Charles R Swindoll

Well the jinx has lasted more than 1 game Coach May. I am ready to get the ice cubes out and if they lose tomorrow I'll even look into the chicken!!! I feel so bad.

Cabbagedad, I guess I should have titled it differently.  Love the quote. Having a good attitude is what I preach. only you can choose to be happy or miserable. I would love to see your list of quotes. I am definitely a quote person. I send one by text before games, after good games, after bad games. It's become a bit of a joke.  Maybe you can make a quote section.

baseballmomx4, I'd be glad to send you my list (on a word doc) if you'd like.  Just PM me an email address.
