Travel Roster....

alot depends on the program and the coach---there is no rule of thumb

It depends on how many 2-way players are on the team, but a good rule of thumb would be 10 pitchers and 15 position players. You will obviously have guys that can play multiple positions but my guess is the breakdown will look something like this:
Pitchers - around 10
Outfielders - 5 or 6
Catchers - 2 or 3
Corner Infielders - 3 or 4
Middle Infielders - 3 or 4

I think TR was pretty much on the money, all coaches do things differently. Some have players that are not limited to one position. Makes them more flexible. Pitchers will make up the bulk of that roster, depending on the program, 10-12 at least.

However, from what I have seen, the bottom line is that usually, the best 25 will make up that travel roster.

The bull pen catcher will travel. The #1 and #2 catcher will travel. So thats 3

Your Friday Saturday and Sunday starting pitchers will travel. So thats 3.

Your starting position players will travel so thats 7.

Your Dh rh and Dh lh will travel so thats 2.

An extra corner inf, mif, of, will travel so thats 3.

The other 7 will be pitchers. Long relief, middle, closer, and situational guys.

In some cases the dh rh or lh will be one of the extra position players taken and that spot will go to another arm. But thats a pretty good break down imo. As TR said it varies from coach to coach and team to team. But that should give you a pretty good idea.

Thanks for all the responses. I can definitely see how a travel roster could vary from team to team based on talent in certain positions and even coaching philosophy.

However, I think Coach May's analysis makes total sense and would be hard to argue against. Thanks for sharing, this is exactly what I was wanting to know.
