Hmmm? How did the Cubs make a little history on May 17th?

I'll take a swing at it...

On May 17, 1984 the Cubs, in cooperation with G. Heileman Brewing Company and Coppertone, launched a product combining beer and suntan lotion.

The product, aptly named Gold Smile with Aloe Vera..."Your Suntan in Your Can". The concoction was designed to be consumed...offering thirst quenching coldness while at the same time providing a golden tan.

Do you remember the catchphrase for Gold Smile?
"You got beer in my suntan lotion!" "You got suntan lotion in my beer!"

Through the process of perspiration the suntan lotion was to be translocated to the Cub fan's skin and effortlessly provide a healthy, vibrant tan while the fan relaxes shirtless in the outfield.

Gold Smile was initially popular, but fell out of favor quickly when it was abundantly clear that the suntan lotion was not translocating quickly enough to the surface and was instead primarily being eliminated carelessly at the troughs in the Men's restrooms.

The resulting slippery floors proved to be impossible to keep clean. The floors became treacherous to navigate. Even tripling the janitorial staff assigned to the Men's restrooms did not solve the problem. The increased number of janitors did come in handy, although, when assisting fans back to their feet after most tumbled ungloriously to the wet and slick deck.

The product was very short-lived. I've heard that unopened cans of Gold Smile are fetching huge amounts of money on eBay.

But of course this roll-out of Gold Smile may not be what you had in mind dogfan.

Perhaps you were thinking of a day in May five years earlier when on May 17, 1979 the Cubs played the Phillies. The Phillies beat the Cubs...23-22. The fans were treated to 50 hits including 11 homeruns.

"Hey beerman! Two Old Styles and a tube of Coppertone...how about it?"

Gotwood,

After just watching Dempster and Eyre implode in the 9th agains the Mets, I think I will go to my shelf and swallow an entire bottle of Gold Smile. I've been wondering what to do with it for the past 20 years. Do you think it is still good? Also, thanks for the tip about ebay. Maybe I'll unload my old rusted "slinkys" while I'm at it.
