Last week, someone started a fun thread called Brush with Greatness. It simply had to do with brushes people have had with athletes. While many of those mentioned weren't truly great, today we have an example of genuine greatness.
With news of the passing of Curt Gowdy, we are reminded of what it means to be truly GREAT at what you do. Who among us can't remember some of the great games Mr. Gowdy called over the years? If you're an outdoorsman, how do you not relish the old shows on American Sportsman, years before outdoors TV shows became so popular? While I never heard him call a Red Sox game, I really enjoyed the Major League Baseball Games of the Week, Super Bowls, Olympics, you name it that this gentleman broadcast over the years. Many of today's broadcasters would do quite well to consider the style that this wonderful broadcaster had in bringing sports to much of America, in an era when one really did have to be masterful at their craft to make the game come alive for so many fans.
Curt Gowdy was not only a pioneer of Broadcasting, he was one of the truly GREAT MEN of sports, regardless of which sport or era it happened to be. The world will be a little emptier, and a little less great, without him.
