Wise seemingly illegitimately won the CF job out of spring training over Brian Anderson before the return of Scott Podsednik. Anderson is a fan favorite who really is an all around better ballplayer. Wise batted sub-.200 and was hearing the boos. He made comments to the media about the fans booing him. After getting hurt and later benched, when Carlos Quentin came back from injury Brian Anderson was sent down to the minors with Wise staying on the big league roster, mystifying many fans because he is an inferior defender and was batting 40 points lower than Anderson (.196). Maybe now the tides are changing!
Pontiac,
Not sure where you get that stuff from. Anderson has over twice the AB's that Wise has. They were platooning the two and one of the reasons that Anderson has the higher avg is that he only faced lefties. Wise also has a higher OBP than Anderson.

I've never heard anyone describe Anderson as a fan favorite. I've heard many say that he is a bust at the plate. No one that I know is mystified that Anderson got sent down. He's had 4 year at the MLB level and has proven that he can't hit.

As to Wise being disliked, you're the first person I've heard say that. I remember him coming up big in the playoffs last year. If you notice, the first person Buehrle went to after his interview...Wise, and gave him a big hug.

I know the players liked Anderson because he has a good sense of humor, but the rest of your comments about the two seem very stretched.
I get my perception from a White Sox message board I go to as well as just my friends in general.

Wise wasn't disliked as a roleplayer/5th outfielder, but when the 31 year old with a .211 career BA in 565 career AB's took the place of a very talented (albeit underachieving) Brian Anderson with little production to back up the decision, that was the beginning of the dislike towards Wise. He was booed even on opening day when he failed on a bunt attempt. His response to the booing was that he doesn't care about the fans. Wise is one of many bad players that Ozzie seems to become infatuated with, and Anderson has been in Ozzie's doghouse since he supposedly partied too much as a rookie. There is little disputing that Anderson's .238/.322 with GG caliber defense is more useful than Wise's .196/.243. It is true that Wise had some great hits down the stretch last season, though, including a walk-off HR. This is probably the reason for Guillen's liking.

But as usual, Ozzie tends to make all the right calls in big games. Other than Buehrle, Wise is the man of the day. You'll be seeing that catch for a long time.

Only among you and your message board friends it would seem. To say Anderson has been in Ozzies doghouse is to completely ignore the number of chances he's been given, and failed at. Anderson is a good centerfielder defensively, end of story. He's average on the basepaths and pitiful at the dish. Anderson also plays a deep centerfield, where Wise plays shallow and uses his greater speed to cover more territory.

Wise is also quite good on the basepaths where Anderson is below average as CF's go.

Wise was booed for failing a bunt on opening day, nothing more...just as Anderson would have been. Your paraphrase of Wise's comments are taken completely out of context...the rest of his comment was that he is there to win games, and if he does that, the fans will be happy.

So all this talk of dislike for Dwayne Wise is a very isolated number of people on a message board and certainly not indicative of widespread fan sentiment.

Wise earned his keep today. One of the greatest games I have ever attended - will never forget it. I was on my feet from the 6th inning on – hanging on every pitch. Buehrle went deep in the count more than several times, 2-2, 3-2, late in the game.

Wise vs. Anderson; Ozzie and the boys don’t expect Wise to hit. He's paid to pinch run and play defense late in the game – they were looking for more out of Anderson at the plate – Wise has better defensive range in the outfield and he showed it this afternoon – Ozzie and Joey look like geniuses.

Best 2 hours and 3 minutes I’ve spent in a long time.

“Never say never in this game because crazy stuff can happen." ~ Mark Buehrle

The best part about today’s game – the CWS go into Detroit for a 4 game series tied for 1st in the Central…

I know that when I say Brian Anderson is a better defender it probably doesn't mean much since there is no agreed upon way to measure defense, but until today Wise was never considered a great defender in CF. In fact, he never played CF until he was 28 years old as a call up for Cincinnati. He has spent the vast majority of his career in the corner outfield, and for good reason. He's also not a prolific basestealer, he's just been handed that title as well.

But who cares, the misjudgement seemed to work perfectly today!

You keep stating things such as this as though they are fact, yet leave them unsupported. It seems your overly negative opinion of Wise is simply preference, which is fine, but nearly completely unsubstantiated.

I only wish I was that wrong that often.

Woody - Long story but... Mrs. Smokey and I ended up sitting concorse level just inside 3rd base. They know better than to put Smokey where he could cause trouble... there were a couple of foul balls, late in the game, down the 3rd base line, that put every one's heart in their throat... I think most of the crowd clued in after the 7th... I kept looking at the scoreboard and pitch count and pinching myself... it was one of those collective surreal experiences - slow motion and fast forward both at the same time...

IMHO - I'm none the wiser but I think they kept Wise for his speed - the tool that never takes a vacation - I'll tell you this - Wise read the ball right off the crack of the bat, without hesitation... that catch just defined his career...
.

First off...it is very, very, may I even say ultra, cool that you and your wife were able to witness and be a part of this great piece of White Sox and Major League Baseball history. Wow!

I know exactly what you're talking about. On occasion I have flashba...ummm, recurrent episodes much like you describe. All triggered by fond baseball experiences of course!

Slightly off topic but a funny story.

I was at a trade show and got back to my hotel room in the 9th inning of Curt Schilling's last close call with a no-no in Oakland a couple of summers back in June. I immediately called home and my son immediately told his mother DO NOT ANSWER THAT PHONE IT IS PROBABLY DAD! She answered and within seconds Schilling gave up the base hit & lost the no hitter in the 9th. My son still blames me for that. Sad but very true story. Frown

By the way; Buehrle was "chatty" in the dug out.
