I was trying to respond to a discussion on another board, but seem to have locked myself out for 15 minutes, so while I wait.

The topic was the ole; R2, bunt down the 1B line with a play to 1B, R2 cuts "inside the cut-out" at 3rd, as he advances to HP on the throw to 1B.

The consensus over there seems to be that; there is NO WAY, a two man crew can ever spot this!!

I am in the other court saying that this should be caught more than not by U1. By no means am I saying everytime, but, what else do I have to do as U1.

Unless the ball is teatering on the FL, and 4 bodies are converging on the running lane, I routinely have time to check R2 at 3rd.

If it's anywhere away from the line, I'm already cheating a bit to get some where near an angle on 3RD. As that could be my next responsibility!

JJK,
I agree......Certainly this play takes advantage of the limitations of the 2 man and certainly a not so alert crew, but like you I feel you can cover this.

I have a coach in my league who was famous for this....

Using the adage "follow the ball, glance at the runner"....throwing a glance over your shoulder puts an end to this...
I too have argued that a two man should have this covered. Even though two man is a series of compromises you still need to be able to get most things. There plays that something gets missed or you end up in a bad position but for the most part you can cover a good portion of the plays.
I saw a crew, with no runners and a ball over F8's head blow a missed third base. You have two guys watching one runner and they both missed the runner miss third on an inside the park. The worst part was it was a non-conference college game.
