Several years ago there was a Fed rule about not having any type of electronic device in first or third coaches box. When did that change and how is it worded now? Tonight we had an ump who would not let our coaches have stopwatches in the boxes.

Also, if your starting 2B leaves the game and still has his one re-enter left - can he be used as a courtesy runner for P or C?

Thanks guys

Stopwatches are allowed in the coaches box. Other allowed items are a rule book (although you better not show that to me), score book and something called a Personal Digital Assistant (which can only used for scoring). A cell phone is also allowed, but only if it is permanently stapled to the coaches face.

A state association may adopt speed-up rules, which include courtesy runners for F1 and/or F2 only. In your situation, since the 2nd baseman has already been in the game, he cannot be used as a courtesy runner. If he was a starter, he could re-enter the game (once) as a pinch runner, but the player he runs for would be removed from the game (and may or may not have re-entry privileges).

Coach where do they get these guys.....

Dash nailed it but here is the rule....if you run in to Mr. OOO again

NFHS 3-3-1

While in the coaching box, a coach may not have any object other than a rule book, a personal digital assistant or comparable electronic score recording device, a stop watch or a scorebook for keeping score....

Penalty- restriction or ejection.

Thanks guys

This guy wasn't very good and unprofessional. We had a batter get hit by a pitch and he made him stay in the box. The pitch nailed him in the middle of the back right between the numbers. He said he didn't make an attempt to get out of the way. Then he tried to coach our player on how to jump out of the way. Our head coach told the player to keep doing it the way we teach them and the ump told our coach to "hush" (he literally said hush) and get back in the box.

To be fair - in that same half inning he did the other team wrong as well. We scored 13 runs that inning on one hit and two balls put in play. All walks and many looked really good against our batters. I don't care how bad of a team you have there is no way 3 pitchers used in one inning can be that off in throwing strikes.

I hate to bash umps (and I think my history of posts in here backs that up) but this guy was terrible.

Wouldn't he only be able to pinch run for the sub who came in for him? Otherwise he would be in a different place in the order
He would be in the same spot in the order but it is possible that person may be a starter. Say you have a sub come in for the DH, he is the new DH. Later in the game the player being DHed for comes in as either a hitter or a pinch runner. The DH spot is dead but the original DH still has a re-entry and if he comes back in, the player in his spot has to come out. This is a starter that still has a re-entry left so he could replace the original DH but then the original DH is dead for the game.
Cleared that right up didn't I?
