MIXON — A Tyler Junior College pitcher rolled his truck into a creek and was trapped for hours before medics cut him from his seatbelt and rushed him to a Tyler hospital Saturday morning.

Payton Diers, 19, of Jacksonville, was semi-conscious and “seriously injured” when medics and Troup Fire Department officials arrived just before 11 a.m. Saturday morning to find his blue 1997 Chevy Silverado upside down in Mud Creek off of County Road 2177 just north of Mixon, said Department of Public Safety Officer Thomas Bledsoe.

Payton DiersDiers was rushed to East Texas Medical Center and at 2:15 p.m. he was in surgery, an ETMC nursing supervisor said.

Officials continue to investigate the crash and do not know when Diers ran into the creek or how long he was trapped in the truck.

Diers’ family lives in Jacksonville and he was known to drive back and forth between the two towns.

He was last seen Friday night at a Jacksonville High School football, but did not show up to TJC Saturday morning with the rest of the baseball team, said TJC head baseball coach Jon Groth.

The team had a scrimmage with East Texas Baptist Univ-ersity scheduled for 10 a.m., and students met at Mike Carter Field at 7:30 a.m. to leave for Marshall.

“We’re trying to piece this together,” Groth said, who asked players if they had seen or heard from Diers. “We didn’t know where he was. We thought he may have been ill. He had been sick a few weeks ago.”

It wasn’t until after the scrimmage did the team hear about the crash.

“He’s a great kid. He’s hard working, friendly, the kind of kid that most people enjoy being around. Anytime this happens it’s tragic,” Groth said.

At 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, around 100 baseball players, friends and family of the right handed pitcher sat in the hospital waiting room.

“When we found out, we were concerned about it. We have the whole team up here praying for him,” Groth said.

As a freshman, Diers appeared in 14 games for the TJC Apaches and pitched a 3.56 ERA.

“He’s a great kid and strong player,” he said.
