My son (2007)has received a fair number of letters requesting that he fill out questionnaire or attend a specific camp, etc. He did however receive a letter the other day informing him that he is being "strongly considered as a second signing period prospect" and that he apply to that college. The letter went on to ask for video and recommendations. It seems odd that a college would characterize him as a signing prospect and ask him to apply before looking at recommendations, etc. Any thoughts? Is this a typical letter?

LOL Orlando... that is sooo very true! My son when in HS received a voicemail from an assistant coach of a school asking him to call and that they wanted him to come for a vist, blah, blah, blah. Well, son called him back just to have the guy act like he hardly knew who he was! We actually went on a visit there... live and learn... this assistant never even spoke to my son during the visit and actually appear to have some disdain for son! We joke about their "recruiting" all the time now! It was a weird experience in many ways!
Thanks for the advice. He likes the school so we'll spring for the application fee and apply. I suspect the BB Staff would also like to see what level of academic money a potential player might be eligible to receive. On the surface (I don't know) a well qualified student-athlete could have a recruitable advantage over the average student player (BB skills being equal)as it allows to BB Program to stretch out its athletic money. Does it work this way? Anyone know?

I would have my Son call the coach and talk to him, and plan an unofficial visit. If my Son like it and there were Positive vibes from the coach I wouldturn in the app. You don't mention but do you know where the coach has seen your Son play? Does he know anything about your Son...a few questions could answer if it is a mass mailing or true interest.

lafmom, My youngest son recieved lots of mail from colleges, some very good and some were a joke. One big name D1 school from Fl. Smile started sending him the standard form letters that they send to about 5000 kids and all the form letters were tossed. For about a year after he was already in college the form letters from this school would still arrive every once in a while, as I guess they had not spit his name out of their computer yet. The funny thing was that all the form letters were sent to "BILLY McMILLON", instead of Brett McMillan. Billy was playing in the big leagues at the time they were sending the form letters. We got a good laugh out of that for a long time.

That is funny BBScout! Big Grin Another good example to take the letters with a grain of salt! I've shared before about my son receiving an invite to a big showcase this past fall saying that "one or more of these colleges has interest....." and here son was already in college!

Good thing you weren't getting those form letters from his (Billy's) alma mater! Eek
