My son almost ended up going there but decided against it with the coaching turmoil at the end of the season. It is a spectacular setting for a University and even though it has a “party school” reputation, the average GPA of the incoming freshmen class this year is 4.01. Some of the programs are very difficult to get into. (Eng, others) Great school, great location, and baseball program probably on the rise - but it will take a couple of years IMO. Living costs are high in SB once you get off campus and the whole IV scene can be a bit overwhelming to a serious student. As you are probably aware costs are going up for all UC schools, and will probably continue to do so over the next couple of years. (but I guess you probably already know this since you are from Ca)

Checketts (ex Oregon, UC Riverside) has the solid reputation and will be bringing in a solid group of coaches so the program should be well coached. Others who I have talked to about him speak very highly of him. The program is not fully funded as of yet, but the rumors are that he will get the additional 1.7 scholarships they are short right now. Facilities are below Big West average, but they have a plan to improve them, which will also take a few years. I do know that they lost one of their top recruits who de-committed and went back to Cal. That freed up some $$ and I do know that Checketts called at least one incoming player and gave him some of that $$. If you or your son is being recruited by the new coaching staff you should be OK. Remember that all big West Teams must get through the juggernauts of UCI and CSF to get to post season play.
