All Texas HS Games Halted Due to Swine Flu

11:40 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 29, 2009

The Associated Press

AUSTIN -- Texas officials are postponing all high school athletic competition until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

The move suspends the baseball season and eliminates the regional track championships, said University Interscholastic League Executive Director Charles Breithaupt. He said UIL officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

The state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11.

The state track meet, one of the largest high school track and field competitions in the country, remains scheduled for May 13-14. But it will require shuffling the schedule significantly.

All UIL academic competitions are postponed as well.

I wonder if Obama will work this into his "1st 100 Day" speech tonight? I can hear it now..."I'm protecting those Texans from themselves. They don't know any better and would go on with their lives as normal if it weren't for me."...By the way, the normal seasonal flu kills 36,000 Americans per year. If it were April 1st I would swear this was a joke.

We haven't had senior night yet either. I am surprised that they are allowing for the remaining regular season to be played out to be honest. When I first heard about the postponement, the first thought I had was that would end the season right there.

Until they are concerned enough to shut down the schools, this is a hollow gesture at best.
School Districts get money for every student in class each day.
School Districts pay money for extracuriculars.
Spring sports cost more than they take in.

And you bus kids from differnt areas of the state for the playoffs so there is a chance of cross contamination. Infected kids from southwest Texas give it to kids in the Metroplex who pass it to kids in east Texas may be the logic.

Tycho - are they still having regular season games? The way I read the release I thought it meant all games.....

We just got the word, ALL includes the regular season games. We are in "stand-by" until 05-11, at the earliest according to the LISD AD's interpretation of the Governor's press release.

No it is all games. I was just saying I figuring they would bang the rest of the season and resume on May 11 with the playoffs.

According to the UIL Press release, the District Certification date has been moved to May 19th with the Bi-District deadline being May 23rd. Wouldn't that mean that any games unplayed in District would be made up and the District results would be final by May 19th? That's 8 days after the suspension is lifted. JMHO
