Question on Umping mechanics--In a major league game, there was a topped ball down the 1st base line--the catcher picked up the ball in fair territory & threw the runner out. The plate ump made a SAFE signal, not pointing fair (which is what I would have done). Is this the correct signal. One thought was that the runner came fairly close to the batted ball, but I never saw a safe signal before. What do you think??

It was probably the "that's nothing" signal in reference to the proximity of the runner and ball. The signal, as taught, is similar to a safe signal except that the hands/arms start across the chest and swing to the sides (like a football official's "incomplete pass" signal) instead of starting extended and parallel with one another.
