I am with MST the umpire MUST be one level above the level called..

I know of younger kids who umpire, but the most successful that I have seen are in the 15-16 range...

BY successful, I dont mean knowing the rules or the mechanic, I mean handling the management of the game, players and coaches...

Having watched some younger teens get berated and bullied by some youth coaches and fans, I lean towards a more mature candidate.

Sounds like the coaches and fans need some maturing.

I will start umpires at 13 and have them work mustang and bronco. At 14, depending on progress, they may work Pony. I have had some youngsters learn game management so well they were working HS Frosh by 15, JV by 16 and Varsity by 18.

A couple moved into the minors...one at 19 and one at 22.
