My son plays all outfield positions and middle infield. He most likely would be best suited at centerfield or second base at a mid level D1 school. He plays at a large high school and in one of the most competitive conferences in the state of Illinois. Made all area in some newspapers and was invited to tryout for the White Sox Area Code Team. At this point several DIII schools appear to be serious.
Sanistano, welcome to the HSBBW. Once you are here, you will find an amazing amount of good information. You will also find variations on opinions. Mine might be one of those.
Having been through this with our son, it might be your son isn't flying under the radar.
If he isn't getting noticed and recruited by DI's, but is by DIII's, it could well be he is viewed as a DIII prospect. If he is being projected as a 2B, that can have some "negatives" as a projection because it suggests limitations. At least it did for our son.
That is not in any way to suggest your son isn't a very, very good player. It sounds like he is.
For whatever reason, there are some players that DI coaches find reasons they cannot play at that level.
From our experience, who is recruiting you is probably a very good reflection of how your son is viewed by coaches who have seen him.
Certainly, that can change. For ours, it did change late in his senior year, but too late for him to switch from the DIII coach and school that recruited him since the prior September.
He got his degree from one of the best Universities in the US, did it in 4 years, played every game but one in those 4 years, played and proved he was a shortstop, played very high level Summer league ball and got drafted by MLB.
Personally, I would rethink whether he is "under the radar." From your post, he is on the DIII radar and that might be where he fits, at this point. That can be a very good option.
