To carry over from the "blocking is the easy part" thread,I just thought Id offer some points and Im curious as to what other catchers have to say

Having played 3b,1b,OF,DH and now catcher(last 4 years Ive caught, the other positions on days I got off from catching)I must say this is the most undervalued position in all of baseball, and quite possibly in all of sports in my opinion.

For example, you set up low and inside for a fastball, and a pitcher misses 1ft outside and in the dirt.Often times you are given a passed ball because it deflected off of you, instead of staying in front. That brings me to blocking. You set up for curveball outside, and our pitcher missed low and in.You have to block it,even more so with men on base. With that block you stopped a potential runner in scoring position.

I think my personal favorite example is the long inning.Every team has them, the inning where your pitchers cant throw strikes, your fielders have made errors, yet the catcher still stays in his crouch and blocks everything, for that long extended inning.I believe thats another way many catchers are undervalued.

I think the reason I love catching is because the whole game essentially runs through me.I can have an impact on any play at any time. What are some ways you see the catcher is undervalued at?

heres the way I see it: everyone who knows baseball, appreciates a good catcher. ANYONE, i mean, ANYONE who says put the unathletic ones behind home plate is an idiot and does not know baseball at all.

i think that catchers get enough credit, there is alot of praise for catchers, sometimes even i think too much..because its not like everyday is so tough...it is toughest, by far, but i feel like i have grown immune to the little pains sometimes.
futurecatcher i will have to agree with u on the undervalued part completely. but me myself i kinda like bein undervalued because i believe too much credit can go to your head. and im only a sophomore(well ill be a junior next year) in high school and i believe that. ive seen it before. a kid on our team hit the cycle with a grad slam his last at bat to finish the cycle. after that...nothing. it all went to his head. but neways ya i know plenty about the long innings. our team isnt that great espisially when we play real good teams. i caught a half an inning that lasted 2 hours once in 100 degree heat. and thats not dry heat its east texas humid heat. i had to hit in our half of the inning and i could barely swing the bat. but thats my job and i have no problem with that
bcb3,

you make a great point. i had a game once where the opposing pitcher stunk. he wasn't blocking alot, and his throws were below average. obviously he stuck out alot, and suddenly i was getting compliments for just "doing my job".

but i think the same goes for other positions- a bad shortstop also sticks out, like anything, altough a bad catcher sticks out EVERY play.

i think catchers are undervalued because they can never make web gems, unless the make over the dugout railing catches. but blocking an outside ball in the dirt when setting up for a fastball inside, imho, can be a web gem, a great play that saved a run...
There's a great life lesson here guys. Think through what you are talking about and what you deal with daily and be thankful for the opportunities you have. You guys are in a great position to gain more than atta' boys and web gems.

Character is what you do when no one is watching. Your reward is knowing that you did something that made a huge difference and you know it. This goes a lot deeper than blocking a wayward pitch, but the two are closely realated. Trust me, people notice and are watching how you react to the opportunities/challenges before you. When you do something that you know is above and beyond, it's not, because that is who you are.

I'm kind of rambling, but I hop emaybe I am getting the point across. I am not coming down on any of you for feeling undervalued or underappreciated. That's normal and not easily tossed aside. Just realize how much of an advantage you have in learning these lessons now. The stuff you are gaining down deep will last a lot longer than any web gem.

One of the secrets to true happiness. Do something nice for someone today, and don't tell anyone about it. That, and call your mother.
