University of Maryland Is Cutting Some Teams - Baseball Is Included in the Mix

If they choose the list of programs to be cut based on program success, baseball will unfortunately be the first of the non revenues to receive the ax.

But don't count out the tens of thousands of people who deeply care about and love terp baseball (you know they play in the ACC, right). I have no doubt that the proud baseball alums believe so strongtly in their viability and history over the years (they actually had a few winning seasons in the league 30+ years ago) will come through with the cash to save the program. I'm sure they'll put their money where their mouths are and save the program (or perhaps they could just quietly enjoy the lacrosse season in the Spring at College Park and call it a day).

What say you? Be like Cali last season and save the program? Be like UVA 10 years ago and save the program? Or let it gently and relatively painless fade to quiet expiration. Alums money where your mouths are or please, please no more talk about the terps baseball.

Lots of talk today about them cutting swimming... haven't heard anything else.

Post reported on Friday that the Maryland Baseball Team posted a $900,000 loss last fiscal year.

I have always wondered how some of these numbers are derived? $900K loss. Assuming the cost of a full ride plus room and board is 35K you are already at $410K in expenses just on schollys using 11.7. Throw in a HC, two assts you probably get close to 600K or more. Travel, equip, meals, recruiting budgets gets you close to that 900K. From a revenue standpoint other that game tickets how does the school count donations. I would think many schools handle their numbers differently.

Don't forget maitenence costs. In a state like Maryland they probably have 2-3 full time guys cutting grass, cleaning up etc. They are likely part of a State Union so they are costing $60-$75K each. That doesn't count seed, equipment etc which probably runs another $10k before it's over. I'd bet the maitenence budget is $150K at least.

I am guessing here are only two to four sports that showed a profit. Mens Basketball, Football, and maybe Men's Lacrosse, and S****r.

I agree that the alum could step up and really help the program.

It would be a huge loss to have one of few D1 bb programs in the state cease to exist. My son's HS goes to see the baseball team play every spring.

I echo the problem with the unions in Maryland.
