UVa'a non-Conference schedule needs to vastly improve before any loudness is heard with the D-1 elites.

Until Univ of Maryland Baseball becomes fully funded, and until it moves into the new baseball stadium that's been 'promised' since early '80's, the Cav's will continue to out recruit talented Maryland players from the state school.

However, if a HS prospect wants to learn how to hit in the largest of college ball parks, look at UVA. And if the HS prospect wants to learn how to pitch in the smallest of college ball parks in the country, look at Shipley at Terpville.

Three recent Terp pitchers are in the bigs, with a few more pitching prospects looking at the reserve list in a few years. For UVA, it will be interesting to see if the Nats 3b will be putting up offensive number like potential NL MVP-07 Met's 3b Wright, or shoo-in NL ROY-07 Brewer's 3b Braun (who has Terp family).

Nationally ranked program. UVa has been in the field of 64 the past two years and Maryland hasn't smelled an invitation in how long? My interactions with the Md staff were disappointing at best, my interactions with UVa staff were awesome.

US News and World Report has UVa listed as the 24th best University in the US, and #2 among public universities. By the way, Maryland was 54th among all universities and 17th among public universities.
Bear, you might want to note that 3/4 of UVA's infield from just four years ago is in the bigs today -- Ryan Zimmerman (Nats), Mark Reynolds (D-backs), and Joe Koshansky (Rockies). They had a supplemental first rounder this year (Doolittle) and their top pitcher (Thompson) is a projected first rounder next spring. Not to say you can't get to the pros from Maryland, esp. with Jim Farr running the pitchers there now, but you've got a ways to go to catch up to UVA.

UVA is built on pitching, defense and "small ball" offense. They could use some more pop at the plate, IMHO, but you can expect them to compete for titles in the ACC annually and to get into the NCAA's annually. They've had some tough luck in the regionals but that's bound to change. They have one of the nicest stadiums you'll find, and the education as noted is first rate.

Oh my goodness, Demon Decon Dad (DDD)......

Let's agree, at least, the D-I Baseball Elite is consistently in the top 5% (i.e. 95th percentile, and should you want to discuss Standard Deviation, consider a SD of 8.3) of all D-I Collegiate Baseball Programs (~ 290+)

Let's also agree that College Baseball rankings is also about numbers, and the top eight are those hottest teams that gets to Omaha at the EOY. Let's also agree that the D-1 Elite is the Top fifteen College Baseball Teams.

This short history lesson will examine and demonstrate findings of Coach O'Connor scheduling of Non-Conference opponents resulting in a Strength of Schedule for Non-Conference opponents (although achieving forty plus wins over the past four consecutive seasons)AND is not to be remotely considered within the Top Ten, Top Fifteen, or Top Thirty NCAA Div I College Baseball Elite by any sense of the imagination (nor moving in the right direction).

Findings within this short history lesson incl:

Coach O'Connor at the helm
Yr....NC SoS Rank..D1-Percentile
2007...#192.........34%
2006...#239.........18%
2005...#253.........13%
2004...#159.........44%

Coach Womack at the helm
Yr....NC SoS Rank..D1-Percentile
2003...#075.........63%
2002...#156.........45%
2001...#113.........60%
2000...#108.........61%

Eme should you seek additional history lessons on ACC baseball.......and going back to before the first year of the MLB Amateur draft or maybe at the start of the UVA baseball program in ~1889. Smile

Yet more currently, you may also want to note a couple of the UVA Athletic Department Ten
Year goals:
- Fully endow all scholarships
- Build and maintain high quality facilities

Let's deal with statistics that matter.

Virginia record since Coach O'Connor took over:

Overall 177-66
ACC 72-38
4 consecutive Regional Appearances

Maryland during the same period

Overall 99-125
ACC 27-90
0 Regional Appearances

and Coach O'Connor has never lost to the Terps.
12-0

That's an interesting little bit of recent ACC History.
Jiminy Christmas there in Illinois,

Where have you been?
Has anybody in the ACC consistency lost to the Terps in the last 10+ years?

I promise you will not be able to keep up regarding ACC history!

The closest the Terps have been to winning one contest vs UVA was last years Friday night conference contest at VA. It was clearly the best of games I have seen in a long time.

Also a matter of stats, the ACC Player/Pitchers of the week consistently comes from the contest with the Terps. That's got to be an all-time conference record or something!

Bottom Line: UVA 2008 Schedule is out.
It clearly resembles a ~280 out of 298 SoS ratings vs non-conference opponents.

I have yet to read your scouting report on the two catchers you have spoken about? When will I be able to hear your opinion on that?

Regards,

Bear

A successful program is not measured by how many were drafted, how many MLB players they have turned out or how many made ACC player of the week.

A successful program is measured by conference championship participation and how far one can go into the post season.

UVA has continually participated in their conference tournament and played past post season. I have friends whose son plays there and he loves it. I hear the camp is very good.
