My 2013 rh pitcher (Who is in the final months of rehab from Tommy John) has an opportunity to visit 3 schools in the northern Virginia area he is interested in and watch them play next month.

I would think he should let the coaching staff know he will be in the area to visit the campus. Should he call or email or both to see if he can speak with the recruiting coordinator?

Before anyone asks, we honestly don't know if he will be D1 or D2 material, but he is projecting at least at D2 level at this time according to many folks more knowledgeable than I.

What is sure is that he is very interested in these schools if baseball never works out.

Opinions?

Yes, definitely your son should let the coaching staff know that that he'll be in the area and will be visiting the campus(s) The coaches are probably more than willing to make some kind of accommodation, particularly if they might already have some interest.

My son and I did that kind of thing and visited 8 schools in a two day trip and watched parts of 4 different games from 4 of those schools (each day there was an early and late game) where the coaches meant with us and we watched the games from the dugout. Seeing all these school campuses, their playing fields and meeting the coach and some of the players REALY helped my son figure out what he really wanted in a school. Before that, he really had no idea what kind of differences there are between schools
I agree with Truman on this. You should visit D1-DIII, plus any NAIA schools that might fit him academically. The more he sees the better idea he will have on what fits him, from a school, baseball, coaching, location, size standpoint. Also talking to coaches are sort of like interviewing; the more he meets and talks to, the comfortable he will be and will get an idea on the type of coach he likes or does not. There is no downside to this...well maybe you wallet, but other than this the more places he goes to the more knowledgeable you and he will be.
