I got out of the hospital yesterday after almost a month. Six months ago my doctor told me I was in the physical condition of a man 15-20 years younger. I'm fit with low body fat. The heart attack was a fluke. My aorta came apart. I was very lucky. The EMT recognized the symptoms of this rare attack (only 2,000 per year in the world). Instead of heading for the hospital he has me airlifted to MA General, arguably the top cardiac hospital in the world. The chief of surgery did the operation. I had a 1 in 3 chance of making it to the operating table, then 50/50 surviving the operation. I woke up to no pain.

There's still recovery. I've lost some vision to the far right. The odds are it returns. My right arm is a little slow when raised. I'm walking and seeing fine (what I see). The rest of the recovery is about strength. It's just a matter of being diligent, but patient. With a 1 in 6 chance of survival it wasn't my turn to go. Someone is looking out for me.

I'll be back participating when I have a little more energy.

RJM - good news!  The guardian angel, astute and timely medical care, plus good physical fitness probably saved your life.

In the spirit of an RJM retort however, I have to nitpick one thing.  The MA hospital is arguably the second best hospital on the planet - second to the Cleveland Clinic that is

Seriously, any place that saves your life is the best place on the planet.
