As everone on the Tennessee forum knows I am an old webster from the early days and I have a son heading to Virginia today to meet up with his new team the Woodstock River Bandits. He is a (Jr.) first baseman from Middle Tennessee and will be wearing the #29 for the Bandits. If anyone elses son is in the league please let me know so we can stay in touch.

He played in the Coastal plains (Carolina's) in 2002 and the Cape Cod league (Mass.) in 2003. He is looking forward to a summer of fun in Virginia.

He is really enjoying the summer league in Virginia. He has a super host family and really likes the guys on his team. They went and watched the Yankees play Baltimore on one of their few off days and had a great time at camden yard.

I just hope they can get hot again and be one of the top teams at seasons end. They are doing pretty good for a new team and the fans seem to really support the team.

My mom and sister are driving up july 11th and spend the whole week in the Valley. Where are the best spots to eat and stay in Woodstock or the surrounding area?

TennDad,

You'll have to get Hokie One's attention on the Woodstock resturaunt scene. He lives there and I'm guessing gets the 'white table cloth' treatment wherever he goes in town.

Having gone to one Woodstock game I can see why your son likes it. The players are really treated nicely in the small host towns. I myself sampled the best barbequed chicken ever when my son tossed me some scraps after his game in New Market. A local church fed the boys from both teams after the game. I told him, buffet after the game -- whew you're getting up there.

Maybe Josh will make the All-star game on the 11th. That would be good for your family and I'm sure fun all-around. Not sure how they pick the teams but if what I read in an archive from 2002 looks like each team is pretty much fairly represented. Since he's right up there with the Bandits it would appear he's got a good shot.
Well shuckins, the red check ones are the white ones that we couldn't get the ketchup stains out of....

Places to stay: Ramada Inn, Woodstock is walking distance to the field. Hotel Strasburg, in Strasburg, is 10 miles away, but very neat rooms-modern conveniences but antique furniture.

Places to eat: Be sure to get a milk shake at Walton and Smoot Drug Store-made the old-fashioned way, and forget the calories. Spring House and Hotel Strasburg are good, lots of fast food places within .25 mile of ball park. Southern Kitchen in New Market has great peanut soup. "Hi Neighbor" in Strasburg is good and cheap, and downright smalltownish. (When in Rome....)If we play New Market while you're here, get "The Cruncher" from the ice cream stand on Route 211 (visible from the field)-delicious mix of ice cream, peanuts, and thin chocolate shell.

Send me a PM if you have any questions.

p.s. to JustMom: What's a table cloth?????
