On Perfect Game I've noticed that some players who were clocked at 2+ events have a strange fluctuation in 60 times. Xavier Avery, for example:

My only guess is that they may have not had laser timing back then. Any ideas?

I would say he ran faster on some days than others.
I also think that the times can be very suspect, depending on conditions, the skill of the person doing the timing and lots of other stuff. But mostly, players really are faster on some days than on others.
6.17 looks like an outlier, but primarily because of the 6.56 that came after it. The date spread on the first three times could certainly be accounted for by improvement, given a player who's obviously still growing.
A timing or data entry issue on the 6.17 time, say it was supposed to 6.47 for instance, would make this look fairly normal, though.

You might be able to test that theory by comparing times for other players at the Jun 2007 event, especially to whichever events they attended along with Avery.
These were probably his best times for the given showcase(s). He could have had slower times if he ran the 60 more than once at each event.
If you threw out the highest and lowest scores, he still runs pretty darn quick! I had not heard of him but glad to see he made it to the Show last year!
The 6.17 was run in perfect conditions on artificial turf In June.
The 6.56 was run on soft wet grass on a cold day in the offseason. Very fast for the conditions.
All times were done by laser.
There are so many variables over 4 years that we do not know that it would be difficult to guess.
I think if my son were to attend the PG events and be timed I would write down weather conditions, time of day, type of surface that event was held, etc.

will say interesting that fastest by far was after he gained 25 lbs.
that 60 number will get you noticed at camps, or it has for my son, but u have to perform when they look at you hitting, defense skills, or pitching, etc. just one part of package.
