I am going to be a junior next year and will probably bew counted on as a reliever for varsity, but i have been told that i dont have enough speed on my fastball. I am a lefty and i throw anywhere from 65-70 but i have very good control and a 12-6 curve as my out pitch. I have also been working on a circle change.

My pitching instructor and highschool coach have told me that i have great mechanics, but for some reason the speed isnt there.

In the field i hve a good arm and it seems as though i throw harder there than when im pitching.

Do i just not have the armspeed?

How can i improve this?

I suspect that you are focusing too much on throwing with your arm and not enough on throwing with your entire body.

The key to velocity lies in the torso, not the arm. You need to make sure that you...

1. Keep your hips closed as you stride (toe pointed at 3B for RHP).

2. Make sure that your hips rotate well before your shoulders. This enables the large muscles of the hips to powerfully pull the shoulders around.

This picture of Casey Fossum is an extreme example of this...

He is hardly pumped up yet can throw like crazy.

I know this sounds stupid, but a way I've steadily increased my velocity is throwing bullpens on the side and thrown from a longer distance. I throw as hard as I can from 65ft. I only throw fastballs. This mentally makes 60ft seem closer and I think it forces you to use more of your torso and legs. Maybe this just works for me, but if I just try to throw hard I increase my MPH by 3MPH somewhat easily. The problem is, do you want to sacrifice location for speed? My pitching coach told me, "unless you are throwing 87+ at the HS level, I would worry about location more than speed because any HS team can hit a fastball right over the middle."
