i am a sophomore who is 6'5 about 235, i have a body of most major league pitcher, i have topped at 88 one outing, but most outings i will say i am around 82-85, what would be the best thing i can do to get my velocity up closer to 90 consistently, i know i am only a sophomore, but with this body shouldnt i be able to get up there, please give me some feedback on your thoughts.

baseball,

I'm a freshman in high school. I'm only about 5'8" and 125lbs and i throw a consistant 80-81mph. Before starting winter workouts, i threw a consistant 72mph. It should be in your best interest to start the varsity level by next year (if you don't already). Anyway, I would STRONGLY suggest joining a program that does plyometrics on a regular basis. That is how I increased by 8-9mph. As for you, you will not see as big of gains as I did because the harder you throw, the more time it takes to gain speed. I hope you will take this advice as it may help you quite a bit in your high school and after high school career.
I know there is a lot of controversy over the effectiveness of it, but for me...hands down, long toss gave me so much velocity. Coming in as a freshman I threw around...63-65 mph. TERRIBLE. However, by playing long toss during the spring season my velocity went up. Most importantly though, over the summer I do a lot of arm strengthening exercises with my pitching coach once a week ranging from long toss to drills that we do on a mound (ups and downs), basically things that put my arm to work and strengthen it. This coupled with better mechanics (which I give much thanks to this site for helping me with) I am now about to head into my Jr season with a fastball ranging from 82-86. I am 6'2" 165 lbs.

Given your size, the odds are that you should be able to throw harder (but that's not guaranteed due to genetics).

My first guess would be that your mechanics aren't quite right. Do you have a video of yourself throwing? That would help me pinpoint a problem.

Also, how much time do you spend conditioning the muscles of your core? Something like 80% of a pitcher's velocity is generated by his hips and torso.

Very good TSP4. I'm glad you are here because your testimony is needed. Results from plyometric workouts done correctly demonstrates those who are determined will improve. It's all up to each individual player how much you're willing to push the body to it's outer limits.

Good work TSP4. I hope you gain 10+MPH more for your efforts Smile peace shep
