Here's a question for pitching experts, something I have often wondered about:

What is the effect of the mound on the velocity of a pitch? That is, let's say a pitcher throws 92 mph from the mound. If he were to immediately pitch from a pitchers plate on flat ground using the same exact motion, what would the velocity be?

I asked that question here about 9 months ago. The lack of a mound is one of many reasons that few pitchers light up the radar at a carnival pitching booth. (lack of warmup is a bigger reason)

But a mound adds speed only if the pitcher has learned to use it to his advantage. A HS freshman may throw slower off one. Therefore, I think pitchers should practice from a mound as often as possible.

My experience is that a mound adds 1-3 mph to fastball speed.
