I've posted about this before, but I'm still confused about the topic. What are the advantages to holding the bat vertically, perpendicular to the ground, versus horizontal, parallel to the ground?
To me, it seems that the vertical positioning hits for more power and handles the low pitch better. However, from watching several players that have experimented with this, it seems that they have a more difficult time catching up with higher velocity when the bat is vertical. It also seems that when starting vertically, it is harder to square up the ball with the barrel. When it's horizontal it seems like the barrel hits the ball more frequently.
I'm no expert or hitting coach, so I really just want to hear your opinions. Thanks.
