Jared caught all 14 innings of a double-header Saturday. He batted in the #4 spot with two singles and a double in 6 official at-bats on the day. Jared's arm was tested only once and even though the ball got stuck momentarily in his glove he was able to get the runner on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play.

I edited together a video of most of Jared's throws down to second. Give a look and tell me what you think about his mechanics. There is more to look at than the last video. I did each throw first in 25% speed and then in full speed.

im watching the video right now. couple quick things that i see. he stands straight up when he replaces his feet. he also throws from behind his front knee. in the game throw, his arm was completely extended when he received the ball. if he keeps the transfer close to his body, he'll shave off time. his arm looks short and quick, which is right where he wants to be. i think he could use his legs a little more. remember, as soon as the ball hits your glove you have to get rid of it. the key is to be able to release the ball just after your front foot hits the ground. if you stand straight up, you loose your legs, which makes you throw with a locked front leg. he looks quick now, but he could get a lot quicker.............. keep practicing and good luck

oh yeah, i would love to know how you set up your video

He does stand straight up when he throws and that means he is relying mainly on his arm rather than his body to throw.

One thing I noticed which I don't teach my guys is the way his right foot drags the ground on the throw. I have always felt that it slows you down somewhat. I want my guys to get their feet into position and then lift them.

I like the way he kept his feet moving toward his target on the one throw out he had to double clutch.

Pretty good overall - once he starts staying lower to the ground his throws will get much better.

One question was this the first or second game? If it's the second game I can see why he is straight up because he is probably tired. Mechanics break down when tired.
Thanks for the replys. These throws are in order from the beginning of the first game. I think the throwdown during play was in the second game, but his mechanics are basically the same every time. I know he is a good catcher. My dad is a scout for the Reds and goes to a lot of games, including all of my brother's games, and he says Jared is the best catcher in his league. Jared is only a sophomore and probably has the best arm on the team, but a great arm can always get better with better mechanics. I was never a catcher. Jared basically taught himself how to be a catcher by mimicking major league catchers on TV. You wonder, why is he asking us about his brother when dad is a pro scout? Honestly, dad doesn't want to be overly picky, so he doesn't say too much. It may be for the best. My dad scouted Moises Alou back in the day and in the comments section of his player report wrote: "Too raw, not a prospect." That has turned out to not be true, but you can see how picky he can be.

Jared is going to a catchers camp this summer that my dad really likes. When I share the video with Jared I'll relay the comments from the board. It will be really helpful for him to see himself while thinking about your comments on what he might do to improve.

Thanks
In the vids from the game (not the warmups)

- Catcher is too far from batter - needs to have glove just behind the batters back elbow (don't reach for ball - recieve it)- kids is 2 feet from where he should be....
- makes for better targets to pitcher/umpire
- easier/better blocking - closer to pitches in dirt - you will actually catch more - ball has less space to jump up funny
- quicker to bunts
- remember the batter is stepping to the ball to hit it -

On throws to second in warmups - the pitcher should throw a higher fastball to make the throw easier/look better - half the battle is making the other team think your catcher has a great arm - they think twice about stealing - if the pitcher is throwing low pitches/off speed/curve on the last warmup your son will in general make worse throws to 2b and the other team will take notice....

He won't be at East Cobb. Jared plays football too and will likely be tied to home most of the summer for workouts. He is planning to go to a camp at Utah Valley State and a basketball camp at Santa Clara. He was invited to play on a baseball team this summer. Hopefully he will do it.
