Ever hear of Charley "Victory" Faust, a Forest Gump-like character who for one magical season sat on the bench of John McGraw's Giants, alongside the great Christy Mathewson, as a "good luck charm" and mascot.

"He was a guy with less talent and brains than most of us. But he had the nerve and deluded persistence."

And he got to pitch and bat for the Giants. Today he's remembered by a stone in an insane asylum cemetery... and a 4.50 ERA in the Major League record book.

Disney is reported to be looking into doing a movie about Faust. The book is available on Amazon and is a SABR nominee for best baseball book.

Isn't it interesting that in 1911 a talentless nutcase could arrange a personal tryout with John McGraw.

Then, as now, having supreme self-confidence and being 6'2" helped. Smile
