I was told this weekend at a tournament that if a coach signing for pitches gives the sign directly to the pitcher, that's considered a visit to the mound. He told me that signs need to be given to the catcher and he sends them back to the pitcher.

I've never heard that and did try to look this up. I often will yell out to the pitcher things like "reach back" or "watch your follow thru", etc.. Are those considered trips to the mound also?

I didn't find that here either. In fact, the rule there indicates that a visit is a trip within an 18' circle of the mound.

Does anyone know if that's right or not? If he's right, I would appreciate a link or something.

Its not clear what set of rules you were using at this tournament, but to me, it seems the umpire was mixing up a few rules here to fit into his own interpretation.

NFHS rule 6 section 1 Article 1-A pitcher must take his signs from the catcher while in contact with the pitcher's plate.

Determining whether or not a pitcher is taking signs from a coach in the dugout or the catcher, as long as he is facing the catcher, is asking way too much of an umpire. Im not splitting that hair.

It is not a visit..(no way, no how).....if it is so obvious, tell the coach the rule that the player must get his signs from the catcher.... that should be enough
