I know I have read the answer to this, but I could not find it on the NCAA website nor with the HSBsBWeb search function.

My daughter is an incoming Junior. She and several of her friends (incoming Seniors) would like to visit a D1 university and talk to the Softball coach about the possibility of playing there. These visits are not solicited by the the school and would be at the girls' expense.

So, by NCAA rules, who (if any of the girls) must be registered with the Clearinghouse for the coach to talk to them? If they have applied to the Clearinghouse but have not received anything back, would it be NCAA legal? Could any of the girls simply call the coach and ask their questions, or does that count as a visit? What about if parents do the calling?

Sorry to ask something that has been discussed, but I'm stumped and I am sure someone here knows the answer.
Thanks.

I know of no instance where regulations for softball would be different than any other sport.

Therefore, since this is an unoffical visit at the girl's expense, any of them may talk to the coach freely. Additionally, the girls or the parents may call the coach anytime they wish. The only restrictions are placed upon the coach in terms of the coach initiating the call, etc.

Being registered with the Clearinghouse has nothing to do with being able to talk with the coach. Hope that helps.
it's as montana dad says and you're OK,

actually you can go on an official visit with just forwarding your hs transcript

BUT, how is it that "rising" seniors (any sport) who are pusuing NCAA college sports opportunities have not registered yet?? even your daughter could have taken care of it already

it's to the student's benefit to Clearinghouse register early!

will it get you cleared any earlier? no, probably not, but the sooner you get the process started,
#1 - it's out of the way,
#2 - and more important you'll begin understand the IMPORTANCE OF CORE CLASSES, which you probably didn't know even existed before
#3 - if you find any problems you'll have time to correct them

before some insist on listening to hs counselors guidelines (usually register later), here is an example from toay's local news
(I'll aslo post a link to the complete story, but the newspaper may require a password)

Late NCAA ruling penalizes Davis
Friday, August 19, 2005 By JOSH WEIR Repository sports writer

CANTON — Kendell Davis’ college football career has been put on hold — for now.

The Alliance High School graduate and All-Ohio running back was not allowed to report to Michigan State’s training camp Aug. 8 because the NCAA did not clear his high school academic record.

The problem stems from an English class Davis took as an Alliance freshman that doesn’t comply with NCAA standards. Michigan State has filed an appeal, which should be ruled on by the end of next week.
..... Alliance did not find out about the problem until May 29, limiting Davis’ options.

“If we had known earlier, we could have got him another class,” Silverthorn said. “It’s as easy as that.”

"If we had known earlier" - that doesn't say much for registering late, but it still seems the kid could have done a summer class??

NCAA rules Davis ineligable

Thanks for the info.

Bee, the Seniors are registered with the Clearinghouse, my Junior daughter is not (yet). She is scheduled to take the SAT in a month and we had planned on registering her after that (thought that was the time to do it). Academically, All are top 10% in their classes.

However, I needed to know about Juniors and Seniors that were not registered with the Clearinghouse because we wanted to go to an ASA tournament in the town and visit the campus/talk to coach when we aren't playing. So, I might have some players with me that aren't registered. I will be on the players to get it done.

Once again, thanks for the answers.
A student is not cleared by the clearinghouse until after graduation. Then you only get a pre-qualification.
However, good idea to register by the beginning of the junior year, to find out if you are taking the right courses for to be eligible for D1,D2,D3. The juniors sit and wait (you can access online) until they process all seniors of that graduating year.
We registered before ACT and SAT so scores could be sent off. I do believe they allow a certain amount beofer youhve to pay for additional ones to be sent out?
