Not wanting to make a mountain out of a molehill here, but was looking for some learned answers...

When as a visitor at a field recently, there was no visitors bullpen to warm up in, just flat ground with dirt, similar to a softball field. The home team had a well groomed mound in their bullpen. When our pitcher asked the opposing head coach if there was a mound he could warm up on also, the coach laughed at him and said "It's that dirt thing with the piece of rubber in it next to your dugout." When we had dinner that night with our sons college coach who had come in to see him play, he told us that in the NCAA, the visitor can request to use the home teams bullpen for the game. He says it doesn't often happen, but the rule is in place to keep the home team from having two different standards of facilities for home and visitors.

Is there any such provision in the IHSA and should there be?

It's not as easy as you might think. Our crew took a long while to finish building the visitor's bullpen.

In this photo we're just about finished...two and a half weeks after starting this gargantuan, budget busting project.

That's me, second from the left. I was mesmerized by the photographer's BROWNIE HAWKEYE Camera.

I'd have to agree, bullpen facilities are horrible at a lot of schools. I know ours is. This is definitely something I have noticed over the last 4 years as I've pretty much been the bullpen catcher the whole time. Even if the bullpen mound is decent, I cannot recall one good catching area in a bullpen. It drives me nuts.

As bad as our visitor bullpen is, our home bullpen isn't a whole lot better. The catcher sits in a massive hole and a passed ball is most likely going onto the track.

Probably the best bullpen I've seen for visitors is at Whitey Herzog Field in Belleville.

CoachB, I'd say that and the lack of scoreboard are the two holes that CM has to fill to make their field top notch. We were quite impressed last night!
I wrote the IHSA, and here is thier response...

Chip,

We do infact have the same provision, if they can not provide equitable facilities for the visiting team the visiting team shall have the right to use the home team bullpen. If that is not allowed, neither team should be permitted to use it.
