I was going to post this over on the Going Pro site, but thought everyone might get a chuckle out of it. At Minor League games, the home team generally designates a "strike-out candidate" from the visiting team. Every time that player comes up, if the player strikes out, the team sponsor for that night offers a promo to all the fans in the house. Dollar pizzas at Pizza Hut, dollar sandwiches at Arby's, etc....

Well tonight in Greensboro ofcrKID#1 got the nod with Waffle House, so everytime Karl came up, 6000 people were yelling Waffles! Waffles!... well, you get the picture. Coming out of a college program where there were maybe 100 people in the stands, he said it took everything he could muster to not start laughing in the batter's box. Luckily no waffles tonight...

Actually what's most interesting... and this is a story (a long one) for another day, but Karl is a Celiac, and for those in the know, that means he is intolerant to wheat... that he cannot digest the gluten molecule. Can you imagine a 6'3", 220# guy who can't eat sandwiches, pasta, Crispy Creams, WAFFLES (!), or anything with wheat in it (and everything has wheat/modified food starch in it!)? And to be in the military, where there is little tolerance for anything "out of the ordinary"?

Interestingly there are over 3 million Celiacs in America... those that have been diagnosed, anyhow... actually just the other day I heard that "Gluten-Free" is becoming all the rave on the West Coast, as the next diet craze. Karl would just love a "sammich" now and then (as Larry the Cableguy says...)

cadDad,

Not to get too far off topic, but actually I just became aware of the Celiac / Gluten-Free issue through my job a couple of months ago. One of my "real jobs" is Web development at General Mills, and they just came out with Gluten-Free Rice Chex within the past month. We're rolling out additional Gluten-Free recipes on the website this month, and General Mills is working on many other Gluten-Free products.

I can only imagine how difficult it is for a young man like Karl to have to avoid all of those products! But I think that food manufacturers are stepping up their efforts to help Celiacs.

Eons and eons ago, I babysat for a woman with this disease---and this in the day before health food stores. She had tremendous problems finding non-wheat food items.....and eating anything, as she was also allergic to dairy products.

My heart goes out to everyone with food allergies, including diabetics.

Can I eat his share of these things - especially the Krispy Kremes????????

I would apply for the job of eating all the gluten based foods, but I may be overqualified.

I know I am breaking all the rules and should be posting this over on another site, but again wanted to share. ofcrKID#1 told me last night that another one of the funniest things he's seen "since going on the road", are the promos that so many of MiLB Clubs do to make Minor League Baseball a family friendly environment.... and it seems to work, because he tells me they play in front of big crowds almost every night/day.

Last night against the Single A team in Greensboro, Karl said they have a Black Lab as their batboy. The guys couldn't stop laughing watching this 'happy go lucky hound' charge out after each at bat and retrieve the bats. He said when it came time to take balls to the Ump, he'd take a small bag of balls in his mouth out to Homeplate, and give them to Blue. But what was really funny was last night was Bark to the Park day, and the stadium had over 2000 dogs sitting in seats, dressed like ballplayers, clowns, circus animals, etc. Gotta' find some of this on YouTube...

Gotta' love America's past time and the 'kids of summer'...

7 to 3, 3 to 11, 11 to 7...
