If you are having a bad game and not winning, never give in, and definitely never give up.

Just do what 04Dad recently advised me to do,

"Walk it off".

I used to advise my players to do this and it really works.

Gives U time to think about things and relaxes ya.

It is what it is. Just accept it because eventually, that's the way to the top.

BTW, that science professor Kelly movie was really good Smile Thanks Haverdad. Now I'll watch my Satchel movie before I head out to a special night game here in Florida afterwards.

Blessings,
Shep

I must admit to reading the original post three times and still am not completely sure what the message was. Walk it off? I probably would have said cowboy up. But that is me.

When a player tries harder he does worse. The secret is to relax, go back to basics, and leave the past in the past. The more you pressure a struggling player is pressured or the more he pressures himself will only result in a tightened body.

The most neglected part of the game in youth ball is in assisting players to develop the mental side of the game. How can it be that 12 year olds are still crying on the mound, throwing helmets and bats, and ragging their team mates? And you can still see remnants of such actions at the HS level.

When I see such activity on a team at any level above LL majors, I assign the responsibility to the coaching staff.

I assume, quite possibly in error, that since this is a board dedicated to HS ball, that this is the age you are referring to. These mental meltdowns should have been dealt with years ago. Something as simplistic as either of the trite but true sayings above are insufficient to resolve the issues.

If a player cannot resolve these issues internally by HS his career is about over. If it is happening on a HS team the manager needs to confront the player on the counter productive problem solving actions in play. And that includes pouting, taking the victim stance, etc.
