My son's team played a game where our coach called time and was granted after ball 4, but before batter reached 1st base.
The other team had a huge lead but weren't happy that ump granted time before he reached 1st(they wanted to steal 2nd since they had a runner on 3rd). Were the other coaches right about calling time during what they called a "live ball?"

1. Time is always called during a live ball. Why would one call time during a dead ball?

2. That said, at most levels, time is not called on a walk until the runner reaches first and play ends. However, you will note that in MLB, it is common for the defensive manager to stroll across the foul line and head towards the mound both before the runner reaches first and the umpire calls time.
Do you think this is a case where the ump was trying to be a nice guy and keep the team that was up from being bush league? Granted the team losing needs to get better but if you got a huge lead and doing stuff like that against me - I'm probably getting tossed for dog cussing the other coach. Then when I'm in the parking lot I'm going to start working on a practice schedule to get us better.

What did you do when the coach complained?

I listened....I acknowledged he was correct...I had killed a live ball and I learned from it.....
