No other criteria, it's simply the best college player.

The College Baseball Foundation is proud to announce its partnership with Mizuno to bring you the pre-season release of the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List. The Wallace Award is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

Wallace Award Press Release

Just making the initial list is quite an honor. As the season goes along, the list is added to, to include players having outstanding seasons, that were not originally included in the list, and at the same time paired down, refining the list to smaller and smaller numbers.

Congrats to Army Soph SS Clint Moore for making the Wallace Award Watch List.
It's basically another meaningless list. Players will be added later. How can they be added if they are not being watched?
And what happens to the players that don't have productive years, are they removed?

How about this--watch all the players and then pick the best one. Novel idea.

It's like the Heisman candidates. Now that Tebo is playing like he did last year he's a candidate again????

There are guys on this so-called "watch" list that that won't even come close being the best players on their own team.

Lots of good players on the list-good for them. Lots more not on the list.

What's the purpose? Watch them all.

Yes. The list is narrowed down and refined throughout the year.

Moc,
Bad day? Wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Why so much negativity?

The purpose, just like Sportscenter, topics on the HSBBW, baseball stats, is to generate interest and give us something to talk about and debate.

Yes, there are players on the list that won't be the best on their team. That's how it works when 4 players from the same team are on the list. The list is a starting point and then a process.

The purpose? It's fun. Sorry that you can't see that.
My son was never close to the radar of a list like this, but I still like to look. I enjoy trying to follow someone from the early days of their career. I feel more invested as a fan as they progress. All lists are "Buyer Beware". Some might be clinkers and there may be some deservig kids who did not make it, but that's not enough for me to scrap the whole list.
Sorry CPLZ, Yeah, got up on the wrong side of the bed. I don't have anything against the players on the list it's just that I've seen lots of guys get hyped over and over again in the past, while other ballplayers get no notoriety whatsoever-local boys that I've watched-one in particular was snubbed by UF and made College All-All American by producing and was never on any list and is tearing it up in the pros.

Example-Clint Moore-Army had a good year last year, batted .350-made the list.

Example-Preston Hale-U North Florida-Batted .350 last year-made freshman All-American his freshman year -not on list.
Example-Andrew Hannon-U North Florida-Batted .359 last year-not on the list.

Congrats to Clint Moore(hope he has an even better year this year) but why does he deserve to be on the list and the two UNF boys do not? And I'm sure I can cite quite a few more examples but I've watched these 2 boys play against 5 top twenty teams last year and produce very well as well as the rest of the season.

Starting point? Why not let performance speak for itself. You produce, you get notoriety, if not, you don't. What's wrong with that. To me an "honor" is something you've earned. Should the two UNF players feel less honored?

Again, yeah I'm a little cranky today-nothing against you. Smile
Moc,

Your examples are precisely why this list is fun. Immediately I had to go to the UNF website and look up the players you mentioned. I got a kick out of it, and I appreciate you taking the time to "argue" with me about it. Now we get the opportunity to debate the merits of each of our perspectives! (but I warn you, I hate arguing Wink)

Just comparing stats, and I am comparing Hannon, since he is also an infielder, Moore at Army is a SS, here's what I see.

Moore +12 RS, +2 3B, +4 HR, -5 RBI, +20 TB, +.081 SLG%, +11 BB, +.024 OBP, +11 SB, -6 E, + 139 Assists, +11 PO, +.015 FLD%

Hannon plays 3rd and bats 5th, while Moore plays SS and bats Leadoff, which probably accounts for the RBI disparity. So, although the batting averages may be comparable, that seems to be where the similarity ends. Moore was also a freshman all American.
