TPM ...

The Dbacks should look into this ... especially with all the cyber scouts that post on a particular fan message board who know everything there is to know about player potential etc. if you know what I mean. They could give the Snakes a run for their money with something like this. Heck, they have the future of the whole franchise figured out ... LOL
If this really gets popular and lots of people get involved the area scouts will be running around like crazy and miss some of the games with players on their actual follow list.

Most good area scouts already have contacts throughout their territory. Some of these are obviously college coaches. If there's a player that is a good draft propect, the area scouts will usually find out about him and then go see him.

IMO, this will be a one year experiment and dropped. Just think how many people will be running around claiming they are Cardinal scouts this year!

Are you signing on ???

The State of Florida has enough scouts to see just about everyone there is to see. If you recall, there are lots of players here who are drafted, I would imagine no stone goes unturned. If you READ it's about finding a player possibly off the beaten path where a scout may not go.

How about you?

I think this was the whole idea, to get those cyber fan scouts/critics a chance to be involved and understand just what it's all about.

It's very easy to be an armchair cyber scout. Wink
I haven't opened the link, so perhaps I shouldn't comment yet, but I will anyway. Here in northern California, and I suspect in most all of the rest of the country, THERE AIN'T NO SECRETS!

What I mean is that nearly every single legitimate prospect is known by many of the organization's scouts, and seen by more than a few people. For a kid who's a legitimate prospect to fall completely through the cracks today is a rarity, I would believe. I'm sure it happens, but darned seldom.

Having a bunch of wannabe scout out there isn't going to produce some great new talent. Maybe an organizational player here or there, but no true prospect.

There likely are not a lot of secrets out there, and most likely could be for organizational purposes only. I posted the link for fun, and for those who complain that D2, D3, NAIA aren't scouted enough. Big Grin But as always there's always the negative.

Interesting story of great finds, check out Clay Mortenson, second pick of the cards draft. I am not sure who was looking at him, but one scout really beleived in him, a senior sign from Gonzaga, the Cards took much grief over that pick from the cyber scouts. In the meantime, I think he might start at AA this spring, he has wowed the brass bigtime.

I am learning that the Cardinal Nation is everywhere and deeply in love with their team, maybe the higher ups just thought it would be a fun thing for them to do.
TR,
Go back and click on the link, it says Be a Cardinals cyber scout, they came up with it, why don't you get a scout.com name and direct that to question to them?

Thanks FBM, at least I know someone reads around here. Roll Eyes

That's ok TR, I accept the apology in advance.

You know I will never apologize to you--I still have the PM's stored

On top of that I am not a Cards fan and we have enough excellent scouts in out region

My thoughts are that they are insulting their own REAL SCOUTS with this publicity stunt

Do I CARE if you are a Cards fan or not, I didn't come up with the idea, write in.

However, unlike grumpy old you, I understand you have an opinion to express and are entitled to it.

As a parent of a D3 player...I think it is a grand idea. Yeah, you're going to have parents and relatives sending stuff in, but all the Cards have to do is click on a stats link. I know in D3, you have maybe 100 or more players batting over .400...but if they play in a low-rated conference and add power or speed and put up numbers...why the heck not? After all, the contest states making a compelling argument.

Couple things here.

1) Every area scout in every area has some type of a relationship with at least one of the coaches on EVERY college team in his area. That college coach will talk to the area scout and tell that scout if he has a player that is above avg (better than the rest of the guys on the team)

2) Every area ALSO has a scouting bureau scout. That goes and see's all those small schools as well as also having a relationship with at least one of the coaches of the team.

Its like each team having 2 full time scouts in each area.

3) The scouts see most all the good players during the summer and fall in select ball. This where the guys who love the game play and they are playing by their own choice. Because they want to play. So the scouts know where the players end up in college. The scouts know who has played and who hasn't.

4) The scouts have relationships with players. Lots of players. Alot of times the player is the best source of where a good player is playing and on what team. Players enjoy scouts and enjoy talking with them.

5) Their is a thing called Advisor/ Agents. They are out looking for players as well. SO, now you have 3 full time people in every area all looking for players. Advisor/ Agents go out of their way to tell you where they think a good arm or good hitter is at. Often they encourage, with pretty good success I might add, to get players to transfer to a higher profile area or program for better exposer.

6) Scouts are out everyday and on the phones everyday looking for a player no one knows about. They do happen, problem is when the coach, parent, player or local guy knows a scout has been in to see a guy. Word then spreads fast.

I have been know to watch games from the pressbox, behind the outfield fence through a crack, while sitting in my car, from the roof of a building, from inside a clubhouse down the foul line. If its a guy I like and I see another scout at the park. I go hide so that scout doesnt know I have been there.

Thats why scouts often times dont speak. That way people cant name names.

Scouts do a great job of knowing their areas.

7) The showcase circuit.

8) Scouts are creative....they know athlete's. Remember the QB at Oregon. He played baseball in HS but did not play in college. When he became draft elgible after his Jr year the Braves drafted and signed him even though he hadnt played any college baseball or any baseball in 3 years.

Also, back when Vick finished his Jr season at Va. Tech the Rockies picked him in the 30th round and he never played any baseball in HS or college.

The good scouts fish in ponds where others dont fish as well as where others fish. Lots of times there is no fish in those ponds but every once in awhile there is ONE big fish in the whole pond and he gets caught! But its also important to fish where the fish are too.
