Waterloo Bulldogs Baseball Week of April 8, 2006

The Bulldogs started off the month of April on a good note taking a game to 9 innings with Nashville to win on April 1st at Waterloo.

Winning 2-1 Dallas Beard took the win with two innings pitched in relief. Dylan McNew threw 7 innings giving up only 1 run. Andrew Fannon, a junior, started off the bottom 7th with a walk. Pinch-ran for, that spot tied the game on a Fielder’s Choice after a Blake Novack single to right and a walk. In the bottom half of the 9th, Fannon again gets on and takes off with the pitch. Shane Gregson’s double to the right-center gap allowed Fannon to score from first for the win.

Next, the Bulldogs played the Eagles of Columbia. Greg Floarke took the win throwing 7 innings. Bulldogs won 3-2 on the last piece of the three-way doubleheader. Beard and S.Gregson both had RBIs in the game.

Monday, April 3 the Bulldogs traveled to Freeburg. A cold day at the park, the Bulldogs never could get ahold of Michael Adamson. Midgets won on two homeruns to rightfield. Brandon Koenigstein took the loss giving up 5 runs. The Bulldogs managed just 4 hits with 1 run scored. Lost 5-1.

Wednesday started off the Mississippi Valley Conference play for the Bulldogs as they traveled to Bethalo to face Civic Memorial. Both teams had 11 hits on the game with the Bulldogs winning this wild one 11-6. McNew pitched 4 innings to take the win while Floarke provided 3 innings giving up just one run. Mitchell Gregson, hitting leadoff, hit a three-run shot after a two-out bunt that went for a hit from Josh Frank kept an inning alive. The Bulldogs took advantage of the Eagles’ pitching staff and its control problems. The Bulldogs started off conference play with the win as they pursue the MVC championship in 2006.

The Gibault Hawks were the next team to challenge the Bulldogs in the first game of the Monroe County Tournament. The Bulldogs put up a 13-hit display to go along with several walks provided. Andrew Wiese was on the base paths several times including 3 walks. The first innings the Bulldogs came out to put up 2 runs. The Bulldogs kept building from there. Mitchell Gregson had a three-run homerun while Shane Gregson would later add 2 more runs with his roundtripper. In the sixth, Fannon would hit one that would land at the base of the left field fence resulting in a double. The Bulldogs would go on winning 12-1. Gibault’s single run came on a homerun off the bat of Dakota Schutt. Brandon Koenigstein would take the win giving up just two hits, four strike outs, zero walks and the one run.

The Columbia Eagles and the Bulldogs would meet once again on the 8th of April this time playing for the title of the County Tournament Champs. Greg Floarke got the start for the Bulldogs. The ‘dogs jumped to an early 2-0 lead after the first, but Columbia would respond with 3 after two walks to start the innings and then a homerun over the right field fence. After 3, the score was tied at 3 apiece. A tie was also present at 5 until Ben Thoma would earn himself a trip around the paths. The Eagles would take over from there due to several Bulldogs’ mistakes. The Eagles would go on to win the game 12-6 with Floarke taking the loss.

The Bulldogs play Collinsville Monday, Wesclin Tuesday, and will face Gibault once again on the 12th. Belleville West comes to town on the 14th before Easter weekend. The Bulldogs will travel to Highland that following week along with a trip to Edwardsville.

I hope to post these updates from time-to-time giving people from other parts of the state a chance to see what is happening down here in the Metro-East. I’ll cover the Waterloo Bulldogs mainly due to my participation on the team, but from time-to-time may be able to provide other team scores and such as well. Please let me know what you think.
