Congratulations to Joesph Hughes ('03) and Jake Arietta ('04) -- two Panthers that are making a splash at NCAA D1 programs this spring.

Joe had his first two starts for OU this weekend and was instrumental in both Sooner victories -- 5-8 with 4rbi and an important OF assist in Sunday's nail-biter with LBSU. Joe is also carrying an 0.00 ERA in two appearances. He is a great kid from a super family -- WAY TO GO JOE! Joe played his first two collegiate seasons at Grayson College.

Jake is 2-0 in TCU's early season and may emerge as their ace before long. We'll be adding Jake to our MLB watch list after two years in Ft Worth. Keep it up, Jake! Jake had a strong year at Weatherford in '05.

Two other members of the '03 Regional Finalists find themselves on new D1 rosters. Bryan Dykes (LHP) at DBU, via Lon Morris College -- and Jeff Nollen (RHP) at UTA, via North Central. Eric Ridener is preparing for this 2nd season in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

Fond memories of a great team -- and opportunities ahead. party

BIG STICKS TO ROAM OUTFIELD IN 2006
Feb. 9, 2006
The following is the fourth in a series of bi-weekly stories on UABSports.com examining the 2006 Blazers, position by position. Each Tuesday and Thursday until the first game of the season February 17, we'll preview a different position. Today: Outfielders.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A lineup can never have too much power. Or too much speed. Or too much talent. Welcome to the UAB outfield.
This solid core of outfielders will serve as the backbone of the UAB lineup, providing the necessary table settlers and run producers to fuel a high-octane offense.

"We can put a speedy outfield out there or we could put a power outfield out there, so defensively, I think that area can be really good for us. Overall, I think our defense will be as good or better than it was last year," said Giangrosso.

Some scouts refer to it as "light-tower power". Some fans have coined the term "going deep." Chicago White Sox announcer Hawk Harrelson has a phrase, "You can put it on the board...YES!" At Young Memorial Field, you might hear it referred to by one name. John Wayne Donahue.

"He can provide great power from the left side. He has worked really hard on his defense and we are excited about what he can do at the plate," commented Giangrosso.
There is good reason to be. Donahue comes to UAB after a monster season for coach Jay Artigues at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Miss. The Quinlan, Texas native hit .377 and led the Wildcats with 14 home runs and 66 RBI. He was named team offensive MVP for his performance and was named to the MACJC all-state squad. Donahue has a picturesque left handed swing with good loft, and look for him to put up big numbers in the friendly confines of Young Memorial Field.
