Can you compare Paul VI and St Johns for this year? I just read where SJ has 10 players signed to play in college next year with Scott Silverstein (UVa) and LJ Hoes (North Carolina) leading the list.
Should be a couple of great games when they match up with PVI. Thoughts?

I'll start with St. Johns College HS in DC. Coach Mark Gibbs ('96) is in his second year as head coach, he replaced his father Coach Ed Gibbs ('67) who is in his 2nd year as an assistant but prior to that had been the head coach for St. Johns for 14 years and IMO the mastermind behind their success and creating their slogan "the greatest show on dirt". Mark did a tremendous job taking over from his father last year and St. Johns finished with an over all record of 23-6. The season last year was highlighted by several outstanding performances by a plethera of talented ball players. In the 2007 season it was another year of highlights for LJ Hoes(OF/RHP - North Carolina), receiving his 2nd first team Washington Post ALL-MET selection, while also receiving ALL-AMERICAN honors. Scott Silverstein(LHP/DH - Virginia) had a break out year and really put himself on the map as being one of the top LHP's in the country. Connor Hoehn(RHP - Alabama) had another great year and eventually was drafted in the 21st round in the '07 MLB Draft. There were additional strong performances by Matt Mack(3B - Radford) and Cory Beahm(MIF - Hartford).
This season St. John's has already been marked as the team to beat having received early recognition by Collegiate Baseball as the Nation's #2 high school team. There are a couple players who've also received some early ALL-AMERICAN nods in LJ Hoes and Scott Silverstein. In addition to Hoes and Silverstein, Hugh Adams(RHP - Florida Atlantic) will be epected to pick up where Connor Hoehn left off and St. Johns will be expecting big years from Matt Mack and Cory Beahm. St. Johns will clearly be one of those teams in the top 3 in the WCAC (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) this year. The real question for me is how will the new players they add to their starting line up help and contribute to re-establishing them at the top where they're accustom to always being. They struggled at times offensively last year but they made up for that lack of offense at times with their depth in the pitching department. This year they have one standout on the mound in Silverstein who will be the top pitcher in the WCAC, after that they'll need some outstanding performances from both Adams and Nick Routt(LHP-Mississippi State). Offensively, Hoes will lead the pack for them and I'd expect improvements from both Mack and Beahm while Silverstein will also contribute with the stick.
I look for more information coming out over the next couple weeks once rosters are set and roles are established but never over look the cadets. There will be additional rankings coming out soon and expect to see St. John's name appear a few more times on these lists. St. John's set another record in our area when they announced the early signings of 9 players who'll go on to play baseball at the next level. Paul VI HS in Fairfax VA is lead by Coach Billy Emerson now in his sixth year as head coach. Paul VI during Coach Emerson's tenure has been impressive, compiling an over all win/loss record of 111-41 over the past five years. Paul VI has set the bench mark over the last 3 years having gone back to back to back 23+ game winning seasons while compiling a record of 77-17, the most wins of any program over that stretch than any other school in the Washington DC area. Paul VI finished last year by setting their school record for most wins in a season by going 27-4 and won the WCAC Division and Conference Championships. Paul VI last year was lead by several outstanding performances highlighted by an amazing junior class. Peter Verdin(OF/RHP - Georgia) had another banner year leading the panthers offensively. In Peter's two years at Paul VI he has set several single season records which include, hits, doubles, stolen bases and runs scored. Peter has already set the career record for stolen bases at Paul VI and looks to break several others in 2008. Zach Costello(OF - Delaware) had an oustanding senior year for Paul VI and finished an amazing career at Paul VI. There were other highlighted performances by Brett Bowers(3B/MIF - East Carolina), Matt Murakami(MIF - Maryland), Reed Bromley(1B/DH - Undecided) among others. In 2007 Mike Mitchell (RHP/C/1B - undecided) had a break out year and simply dominated conference and out of conference foes alike. Mitchell finished the year 8-1 suffering his only loss to St. Johns in a 1-0 contest against Silverstein, however, the two would face again in the WCAC Conference Championship Game and Mitchell would have his revenge, beating St. Johns 5-0 in the Championship. In 2008 w/ such high expectations, Paul VI will be expecting big performances from 1 thru 9 in the line up. Last year Paul VI took 2 of 3 from St. Johns including the Championship. I'll be honest I fully expect almost a circus like atmoshphere. I believe the stands will be standing room only, there will be scouts everywhere from both college and the professional ranks. In my mind St. Johns and Paul VI are the two best teams in the WCAC and there will be so much talent on the field when both of these teams play each other I'm already getting goose bumps thinking about it. There will be additional tough competition for St. Johns when they go out to California for spring break as there will be for Paul VI when they go to Florida and South Carolina for spring break but clearly here back at home, mark your calendars for these two games and if you can make it, get there early...it should be a great night of baseball.

J2h6 you have got to take a major chill pill on PVI. I know your a big supporter but face the facts last year PVI got crushed (and I am talking crushed) by NDA in Hartsville. Then they failed to even make it into the championship game at states. What does that say about the true strength of PVI and for that matter St. Johns if PVI beat them 2 out of 3 last year? You also wrote an incorrect statement, "Paul VI has set the bench mark over the last 3 years having gone back to back to back 23+ game winning seasons while compiling a record of 77-17, the most wins of any program over that stretch than any other school in the Washington DC area". You better check NDA's record over the last three years (and four state championships in a row). Warm up your fingers because your going to have to revise that statement.

I'm not sure whether you feel you have something to prove or what? I would think that any player or parent from a class program like the Notre Dame Academy would know how to handle themselves a little better. Notre Dame Academy has been nothing less than impressive over the last several years. They have every right to boast about their program as there are not many out there that can state they've won 4 state Championships (3 in division 2 and 1 in division 1, top division) in a row. I am absolutely a fan of your baseball program and wish you guys all the best this year.

I have not gone out of my way to " bad mouth" a program (PVI's or anyone else for that matter). What I said was for you to take a chill pill and get a grip on reality. PVI, StJohn's, NDA and for that matter a number of public schools have good programs. You happen to be just a little to wrapped up in one. As for the number of wins the past three years, NDA has more than 90 (and after I check with Lockhart tomorrow to get the actual number don't be surprised if it is actual total is greater than 100). Like I said get your fingers warmed up.

I was asked a question by Wagoneer and responded to that question. I am a huge baseball fan in general and yes do carry a bias for Pvi and that'll never change. However, I also feel it's important to share information and thought that I complimented the St. John's team rather well, considering they're our rival. IMO this is what it's all about, promoting these young athletes and let the chips fall where they will. In the end I can talk til I'm blue in the face but If the players don't back it up on the field it really doesn't matter what's stated hear now does it?
Now, if this were not a thread about the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and the upcoming 2008 season, I would absolutely mention other great teams in our area like Madison, Oakton, James River and Notre Dame Academy. However, this is a thread about the WCAC and thus these are the teams I'm focusing on. There are others that will focus on other districts and that will also be the only teams they'll discuss. If you have any difficulty with understanding this concept cool breeze I've gone ahead and started another thread for you titled, NDA - 4 time state Champions !
In the meantime welcome to the HSBBW and I hope you become a positive contributor to this site and you learn a great deal from it. Unfortunately, We don't include prep schools in our statement that allow 5th year HS student athletes. Paul VI has set the bench mark over the last 3 years having gone back to back to back 23+ game winning seasons while compiling a record of 77-17, the most wins of any four year HS program over that stretch than any other school in the Washington DC area.

Excellent reporting j2h6. I'll be reading this thread often, even if I don't have any other interests than being an Ireton alumnus who didn't play baseball by the time I was in HS.
