Thought I would throw a shout out to that most famous/iconic member of ours. I know he has other things keeping him busy this summer but still miss him nonetheless.

Asking people to share their favorite Fungo stories, or a story where he might have posted something that helped you or moved you in some way. Alternatively, post a hearty welcome for his return.

Here is one of my favorite Fungo stories and it is cobbled together from a couple of his posts about a player who went on to have a very successful college and now pro career:
quote:
I want to share a story about a frail skinny kid that used to come to my house for batting practice. Not a contender was what everyone said -- but I knew better because I knew Drew. Drew had nothing going for him ---- except Drew.

Drew Sutton was my son's teammate in high school. He always played in the shadow of my son with little attention given him. But his desire was obvious and in my opinion close to being an obsession. He lived here in our town with his divorced mother while his father lived in Texas. I suggested he come to our house and I would help him with his hitting. It was a daily event to see him coming down the driveway and he would "pound" baseball until I was exhausted and only after I "mentioned" I had other things to do. He went JUCO out of HS and then on to Baylor and then was drafted in the 15th round by the Astros. Today his desire is still evident as he breaks records and sets on the doorsteps of MLB. Watch for Drew Sutton next year to make the move.

I know he's been busy taking some phenomenal photos with his new camera and advising some of us on our own photography hobbies.

Fungo is a man of many passions...from fishing to photography to BBQing to motor boat restoration to videography to grand-parenting to baseball. He's a busy man!

But yes, we need him back here...he is THE best! Wink
I too miss Fungo. Without all the "old Faithful" posters this website would not work as well as it does to help parents/players navigate the very tricky world of youth/high school/college/MiLB, MLB baseball. We value their opinions and they have all helped countless people.

And Fungo, I'm not really calling you old. But we do miss your wisdom and guidance. Come back soon.

My favorite Fungo story isn't about baseball at all.

When a series of tornadoes ravaged Tennessee, including Jackson, a couple of years back Fungo's home was the safe haven for family, friends, neighbors, and some folks who Fungo did not even know. Even cherished family pets, dogs if I recall, were provided sanctuary from the deadly twisters.

Evidently it was well known that the Fungo house was one of the only in the neighborhood with a basement. The storm sirens began to wail and all of those souls knew to head towards "the house with the basement".

Together, huddled in that dark, noisy, but life saving basement, they all undoubtedly expressed their gratitude and without question they will be forever grateful to the wise, thoughtful, and generous man that we all know as Fungo.

I miss Fungo, probably as much as anyone does. Some of you don't know this, but he has been a wonderful advisor to me regarding this website. Time and time again I have asked him privately about how to handle a sticky situation or a persistent rule breaker, and he has had very wise words to offer, and has been very supportive when I occasionally wonder why in the heck I do this. Wink

My favorite and most treasured Fungo-ism comes from one of his tag lines: "Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, and then beat you with experience." Though most members of our community are kind, thoughtful and respectful, the occasional ... ahem, idiot ... has proven the saying true from time to time.

I like and respect Fungo (Luke) very much, as evidenced by his unique title under his member name (yes, I placed it there). I miss Fungo, too!

Julie

P.S. For any newcomers who don't know Fungo, here is a search listing of some of his posts:
