Yep, I TOTALLY agree!
Absolutely.
TR, thanks for posting this.
By the way, I thought that they carded pretty strictly on Beale Street. I thought wrong. Oops.

Hats off to coach Calipari, that takes guts.
My favorite part of the article ... from the coach :
quote:I've asked the players, if anybody here doesn't think they can live with that, I need them to come and see me so we'll help them transfer."
He's got them headed in the right direction.
I agree that it was a good move, but were is the real hammer. Were is the university coming down on Calipari for recruiting these characters. I realize we have a due process issue but were are the suspensions, were are the expulsions? I find it disturbing that the coach has to have a 7 day a week curfew and a no night club policy for young men who should consider it a priviledge to be playing at a university and receiving a free education. Sometimes I think we set the bar way to low as a society for athletes.
You're right deldad...sometimes we set these bars or taverns too low...in the cellar even!
LOL
I find it more disturbing that more coaches don't have the nuts to lay down the law. As a section of society, college athletes are toward the top of groups that are involved with unlawful disobedient activities. Minor as most may be, they happen often, and most are not even reported. Hats off to the coach for making this call public.quote:Originally posted by deldad:

In the long run this public statement will only help with Memphis bring in quality student/athletes. Looking back I'll bet the coach had long term plans with this statement.

I am with you
I have never been a great Calapari fan as a coach but his stock has risen immensely with me due to this---some things in life are more important than winning

I've read the article over a few times. Seems to me this most likley is not the first incident on the team, and he finally laid down the law.
I can't imagine how hard it must be for a coach to try to discipline and keep order among his players.
My heart goes out to football coaches.
Deldad,
Unfortunetly many schools have rules regarding school consequences. Most have two but some have a 3 strikes rule they have to follow (for athletes). For a non student athlete in this situation, the school wouldn't even find out. The university determines those guidelines based on their general population. That's why the coach is not to quick to act before he gets permission with the school. The players were charged with misdeamnors. For us, it's unacceptable behavior, but all kids grow up in different environments, we can't expect them to have the same values or upbringing as most of our kids have.

Wherein the article to ascertain that is not the first incident with these palyers
Assumptions are not always right
Laying down the rules is not that hard ---you lay it all out in the beginning of the season---screw up and you pay the consequences-- you just need a strong coach to make it work---my hat is off to Calipari

You are absolutely correct. This is far from the first incident with this program since Calipari arrived a few years ago. Calipari would sell his soul to win. I believe this was just as much CYA for his career as it was discipline for the team.quote:Originally posted by Tiger Paw Mom:

TR,
Coaches don't go to extremes in disciplining the entire team in september unless there have been issues in the past.
I know nothing about this coach, but seems to me he has had no choice but to show some "tough love", either because there was too much forgiveness or he wants his job.

TPM, I laughed when I read this. My oldest sister works for a DI-AA school in Illinois as a Residence Hall Complex Director (she oversees 3 grad students who are Hall Directors). Anyway, in her building are a lot of football players (and basketball players too as well as regular students) and she very seldom has a problem with football players. If she does have a problem, I believe she's said that all she has to do is mention the coaches name and they comply! She said she had one so scared of missing a study hall session that he was freaking out because she needed him to help her and she had already talked to the coach, but she said he freaked out the whole time! That's fear! Must be that scholarship hanging over their head
Must be a "I put up with no BS" kind of coach.
I feel sorry for those football coaches who have 80 on roster!!! Basketball has what, 20?
