I figure this has already been tossed about before, but I didn't see it anywhere - do you think the "Norm" stats that are shown on the WebBall website for 15-17 year olds are accurate? Great website, but I take it those numbers are generated by the players themselves. Is a typical ba .407, or fastball at the plate 80 mph or a 3.05 era? Reminds me of the Dr. Kinsey report where guys told him how big they were....................!!!!! My son hit .413 last year for the varsity - and I was estactic - now I find out he only had one more hit than the average high schooler!!!!

Oh sure, the AVERAGE 18 year old HS pitcher throws 87...in his dreams. And has a 1.90 ERA.

Dick Mills has stated that the average HS varsity pitcher tops out around 79. That may be true for starters in larger programs. There are plenty of juniors sitting on the bench who can't hit 72.

I don't think Mills is factoring in the multitude of kids who go to tiny private or rural schools or who play on inner city HS teams that never cut anyone and where plenty of the pitchers are freshman and sophs.

I think that's what makes 78 the average. You take the fire ballers down south and out west and average in the slow guys from up north.

I have been involved with HS baseball now for about 6 years in Wisconsin. I would say at my sons high school, the VARSITY FB speeds ranged from 74-89. Last years top three starters were 74-75, 77-79, 83-86. Relievers came in in the 75-80 range depending on who it was.

Two years ago we faced a guy whose fast ball never broke 65 and his off speed was in the 40's. Yes this was varsity. He was effective for 3 innings then all heck broke loose.
