Son had a meeting this week prior to next week’s baseball tryouts. He was told that 3 times per week there would be an hour long weight lifting session before baseball practice. I’ve heard of lifting after practice but not before. Has any one heard of this, and is there a chance of injury. Plus most of the baseball coaching staff also coach varsity football.

Baseballvalet,

Without knowing all the particulars you answered your own question..."most of the coaching staff also coach varsity football". 3 hours of lifting per week especially in-season is great for a bseball player but I would not recommend right before practice.

Sounds like there might be a fear that the baseball players might 'slip' during their season.

One question...does the track team lift before track practice this time of year?
Maybe it is an issue of timing. I have heard of this before in a situation where the weight room is only open before practice.

I would not consider this optimal in any way, shape or form and would much rather do lifting 2-3 times per week post-practice/games.

But as Jason mentioned it is difficult to comment without knowing the reasons behind the decision.
Underclassmen will always fight this uphill battle until they are on the Varsity.

If the coaches will not look at an alternative time to lift I would suggest asking if they would be open to allowing your son to do a more appropriate program specifically for baseball athletes. This will not hurt his strength for football assuming he is a multiple sport athlete and he will be fulfilling the demands of the coaches by working out with the team.
