Subject of weighted balls comes up every few months on every baseball group I've followed.

But no one mentions the potentially disastrous implications to a guy on the catching end. I've seen balls up to a very hefty 12 ounces being sold on the web. I always assumed they were mostly thrown into a backstop. Correct?

(I'm picturing two javelin throwers playing catch Smile )

Likely we all have thrown heavy balls... those left out in the rain. I weighed one on a scale a few years ago: about 7 ounces. And even that felt like a shot put compared with a normal baseball.

As I recall it was hard to throw half a far as usual.

Only advantage I can imagine with a 12 ounce ball is that one could play "long toss" if incarcerated in a jail cell.
At the U of M we use 4 5 and 6 oz balls. Im one of the few that trains with them and I believe they help with training my arm. I throw them all with max effort in 4 different positions. On the 2 knees facing the wall focusing on arm speed with no hip rotation. Then in the stride out position, then step behinds and the last one is full pitching motion. I do the Rour program Regular ball, Overweight, underweight, Regular. 4 throws regular, 3 over, 5 under, and 4 regular for each position. It is also a very good workout! All throws done at max velocity.
