Runner at 1B, stealing 2B on the pitch, less than 2 outs.

The LF fielder dives for a sinking line drive. It hits his body (no catch) and is unintentionally deflected out-of-play. After discussion, the ump awards the runner from first home, claiming he had advanced beyond 2nd -- and the batter third, claiming he had rounded first.

Now, other than the fact that the home plate umpire could not have possibly seen the position of both runners in addition to the timing of the deflected hit....what rule should be invoked?

If it is the last base + 2 (as in the case where a ball is thrown out-of-play from the outfield), is it from the time it hits the fielder or the time it actually rolls out of the field of play?

We have the game under protest.

Thanks.

We are protesting the interpretation of the rule. We believe the runners should be awarded two bases from the points "occupied" at time of the pitch (1st and home).

Can you provide the specific rule? Despite the fact that we feel that it was impossible for the batter to have rounded first before the ball was touched, we understand that judgement calls will not be overturned. Our protest rests on the chance that the umpire misinterpreted a rule.

Thanks.
NFHS Rule 8-3-5
An award is from the base determined as follows:
b.) If any pitch (batted or unbatted) is followed by a dead ball before the pitcher is in position for the next pitch and before there is any throw by the fielding team, any award is from the base occupied at the time of the pitch.

The ball was deflected into dead ball territory, not thrown there. This would indicate that my original answer was wrong. (I hate it when that happens) Sorry!

You should win your protest. A ball that is batted and goes out of play is two bases from TOP. Because it touched the fielder is only relevant in that it touched the ground before going out of play. If he had touched it and it directly over the fence fair then it would be 4 bases. If it touches the ground before or after the fielder then goes out either fair or foul then it is two bases TOP.
