One of the other threads today got me thinking about this. How many have gone to college to play as the primary reason? I went to school for athletics. After changing majors about 4 times and taking courses for the sake of taking courses, I finally focused on something and got a degree. Later, I even went on to advanced degrees. Recently, a kid that I coached for three years called me. I had not heard from him for over 20 years (Hey, at least HSBBW doesn’t see me as an old timer Big Grin). He went to school for much the same reasons as I did, but he flunked out. After a stint in the Army he went back and is now a surgeon!

Are there any others out there with similar stories? How many out there went to school with both ideals in mind? I know that now as someone on the down slope of the other side of the hill, I advocate making good academic choices.

I think that, for serious baseball players, the best advice is to do both! In numerous threads on this website, folks have talked about finding the right "fit." It is so true. This applies to the baseball as well as the academics.

That being said, though, it has been our experience that one can find decent academics in lots of places, even in JUCO's. College is what you make of it. Athletes especially have to make wise class selection choices wherever they are. If the academic advising at their school isn't the greatest, then they must take it upon themselves to monitor requirements and their progress toward fulfilling them.

Many young people don't make their ultimate career decisions until they have a little more life experience under their belt. Grad school can finally put them down that path. But getting that undergrad degree, wherever it is from, makes life a whole lot easier!
