West bounced back from the Farragut loss, besting host Bearden 5-3. Bearden ace Taylor Leija had trouble locating his curve in the 1st inning. After two walks sophomore Mike Mayer hit a 3 run homer to left field. Leija settled down after that. West was unable to mount any additional threats. Bearden stranded several baserunners but was ineffective against West starter David Zeanah. Bearden went into the bottom of the 6th trailing 3-1. Zeanah tired and issued a couple of walks. Bearden managed to tie the game before senior reliever Aaron Hookman could put out the fire. In the top of the 7th Hookman hit a 2 run homer to break the tie. Senior Tanner Hiles went to the mound in the 7th and shut the door on Bearden, recording a popup to 1st base and two strikeouts.
I saw players from South Doyle and Farragut in the stands. While cool, it was a beautiful day for baseball.
West is leaving for Florida this evening, where they will be playing in a tournament later in the week.
