West Coast League for summer ball?

son (RHP) played in WCL this past summer.  He was on the Port Angeles Lefties( they had a sub par season).
Good overall experience though.
solid league with many kids drafted each year.  some scouts saw son in WCL play and contacted current HC and PC.. so it was worth it

As far as WCL.   players come from all sorts.. D1-D2 D3-Juco and fresh out of HS going into D1 . good competition .

son was hosted pretty far from the field (20-25 min) and town -  and we had to rent him a car so he could travel/workout etc... He wasn't too thrilled at first(24-48 hrs in) but in the end he liked it.

Son played in WCL after his freshman D1 year and had a blast.  Overall it is a competitive league with many outstanding players as was mentioned above.  He had home stay, it is generally a hit and miss with host family but he was fortunate in having one that was very accommodating.  The team generally helped with some travel expense getting there, getting back home he was on his own financially.  He was a position player and generally played about 5 days/week with 1 day off (didn't have to show up on the field) and a travel day.  Being a city dude he learned and loved fishing, golfing, biking etc since it was a very small city at the base of mountains.  We visited him for about a week and it reminded me of Mayberry from the Andy Griffith show where everyone knew each other, can pick out strangers and tourists, and you can drive from end to end of town in about 10 minutes.  Good fan support since that was the thing to do in the evenings.

It gave my son a chance to grow up away from us, secluded, and relatively on his own.  He made some great friends of teammates, some he still keeps in touch after many years.  The long bus rides, baseball 6 days a week, no frills motels, eating fast foods are all a great introduction in how minor league baseball may be if fortunate enough to get there.  It also made him appreciate how fortunate he is to be where he is at, how people enjoy living the simple life compared to his, and playing the game mostly for fun while having a great time.

I agree with all the comments here, very positive experience for my son last Summer (he was HS senior). Travel is more than other leagues according to conversations with parents of East Coast league players, more akin to NW League than say Ripkin from that standpoint. Not a huge con but traveling from Medford OR to LA is like going from Boston to FL (most drive in carpool and see A LOT of I-5). Competition is very strong. Most starters sat 90-93 with an occasional 94-96.

I probably should know this but what does an incoming D2 position player freshman do for baseball in the summer.  I see kids here play local 18u but it doesn't seem the competition is very good.

Out of curiosity, the West Coast League doesn't seem to have teams in either Medford OR or Los Angeles.  Was this the WCL?  or something else?

My mistake I was referring to CA Collegiate League and many of the teams have the Medford Rogues on their schedule.

Has he asked the college coach?  Some college coaches can get rising freshmen onto collegiate league teams.
