Friends, here's the deal: my '08 RHP will be playing on a summer 18U team in the Pac NW, to also include a tournament in San Diego in late July. We will be in the States from about June 20th until approx August 10th, but all on the West Coast this year.

My son's been to a couple PG events and I want to send him to another this summer, but there just aren't any (so far) on the West Coast during the time we'll be around. It stinks having such a narrow window of opportunity every year, let me tell you! My fingers are crossed something do-able will appear on PG's calendar so my son can continue his annual PG showing -- but just in case.........

What other West Coast showcases or camps would be good? We have to make our travel plans well in advance, so I'm grasping at straws here. Any help on the exposure question would be much appreciated from you Left Coasters!

Thank you!!

You should check out the Stanford All Star camp from July 1-5. Your son might be one year removed but would be worth the effort...if he is a good student. Is pricey but lots of top academic schools and it is a great camp. Your son will receive an evaluation which can be used for any school also.
This is a SRO type event. They have a waiting list and it fills up rapidly. Check the link for the online application.
Maybe justbb has a little "juice" with the coaches???? Wink

No "juice" that I am aware of...but infielddad is correct in suggesting this camp. The Stanford All Star Camp is generally regarded as the best of its kind, anywhere. I doubt they'd want it referred to as a "showcase" but top players will be on display and competing against each other on a truly beautiful campus. The players stay in the dorms and each team is coached by a visiting college coach or former player.

One of the best experiences our son had during his Junior-Senior summer.
Just, I just looked at the info - juniors and seniors........that makes it really tempting. I do worry about conflicting with his summer squad schedule, though. Don't want to PO the coach. I know every kid leaves their summer team to do this - is it usually accepted well?

My other 'worry' (and I'm great at it, believe me) is that I'm at an overseas APO address. By the time I receive my registration forms, other people will already have returned them.......I'd have to see if they'd consider faxing the forms to me under the circumstances.....
Krak,

For what it's worth I would highly recommend the Stanford Camp. If you can get your son in... I think you should do it.

I think there are a lot of Showcases in California. Unfortunately I'm not sure which ones are the best.

I do know we will have some events in Northern and Southern California this year that have not been announced yet.

I know Blaine Clemmens will be running at least one event in the Bay area. And Mike Spiers is running some events in Southern Cal.

Krakatoa, I'd recommend you contact the Stanford baseball office and ask them to either email or fax you the registration form. You can then fill it out and send it back with your deposit. I'd suggest Fedex or DHL or some other overnight service if you're worried about how long it'll take from where you are.

It is definitely worth having him attend the Stanford Camp, regardless of any other conflicts in his schedule.
Okay, guys 'n gals, here's where my naivete` really shines through. Other than being at Stanford, and run by Stanford's awesome staff, what is the draw? Lots of other coaches on hand? Good connections to be made?
Never mind - once again the HSBBW Search feature has struck gold on this one.......consider me now fully informed Big Grin

If your boy has been seen by a pro scout, see if you can get him to recommend him to an Area Code tryout. He may be a year early as an '08, but there were a handful of talented '07s at the tryouts this past summer (mostly '06s). If you can't arrange an invite to a tryout, you can attend one of the Area Code open 'camps' and try to earn an invite to the tryout through his performance at the camp ... they usually only invite 2-3 kids out of each camp, so he'd have to stand out. The first round tryouts are usually mid-to-late June, with the final tryouts in early-to-mid July. The Area Code games are in mid-August. Even if he doesn't make it to the final Area Code games, the tryouts are still very good for exposure as they are attended by a large number of college coaches and pro scouts. The first round tryout at Loyola had probably 30+ coaches and scouts. The stands at final tryout for the Brewers team at USC were packed with coaches and scouts ... well over 100. It's a great opportunity for getting visibility. If your boy is two-way, it's hard to predict what the Area Code scouts will see ... my son tried out as a RHP/1B, was advanced as a RHP, got to USC scheduled to pitch only, and was told on the field to try out as a 1B only, so you never know. Very few two-way guys ... you had to be a phenom like Robert Stock to play two-way. Seemed like unless you throw over 90, your chances as a pure pitcher are slim ... he was throwing 87-89 and they had 25 pure pitchers out of 50 scheduled to pitch throwing over 90.

Also, age-wise would your boy be eligible for the Junior Olympics in Arizona? Another great venue ... maybe see if you can get him onto a West Coast team as a guest player that is traveling to the JOs.

Try contacting Jeff McKay at baseballnorthwest.com He puts together a Junior Olympic team every year based in the Portland/Seattle area. They also have something called the Pacific Northwest Championships Where they group the best kids by grad year from Or Wa Id. I think he could also let you know about Area Code tryouts in the Seattle area. He's a scout and has a lot of good connections.
