Your first summer is spent at Beast Barracks, which is basic training for all cadets. It usually begins in early July and ends on the first day of the academic year with a ten mile road march back from the field. When I was there many years ago, varsity athletes were not treated differently, and may football players went to their first day of practice 20-30 pounds under their playing weight (as did we all).

The second summer, cadets go to Camp Buckner, which is "advanced basic training". It is located on the academy reservation, and also takes most of the summer.

The third summer, cadets will spend a portion going to Army schools, such as Ranger and Airborne, and another portion serving in an actual Army unit in a lieutenant's role. This is called Cadet Troop Leadership Training, and gives the cadets a taste of what the "real" army is all about.

The last summer, cadets will be part of the "cadre" for Beast Barracks or Camp Buckner. They are the leaders and primary instructors of the cadets going through the training.

Many things have changed in the years since I have been there, but I do keep in touch with what is going on. There may be some time for varsity athletes to train, but nothing along the lines of wood bat leagues.

If you are thinking of a likely pro career, or making it to Omaha, it might not be the choice for you. If you are interested in a great education, surrounding yourself with honorable people, maximizing all of your potential, and serving the nation, it is a good choice.
USMA82 hit the nail on the head, his description is a good one. There are some minor changes to his itenary that my son has in front of him, but they all invole DUTY. However, to answer your question, all four summers are loaded up. There is some time to work out, especially after your first year. This year my son was assigned to a group with most of the baseball players. This made the summer session go well. I am not sure if this is policy or coach's idea...but it was a good one.

I have not heard of anyone being permitted to go to a summer team and playing. I believe the most that happens is captain run practices if any...very informal.

As USMA82 said...baseball is and should the third reason to be there. USMA will give a young man or women everything you can think of...but for that there is a mandatory committment after your second year.

However, USMA82..until the season starts,,,, I'm thinking Omaha all the way!!! applaude applaude applaude applaude

The choir has spoken.
