I will soon be relocating to new job in Westlake, TX, outside of Dallas.

I'm looking for some information on high school and fall baseball programs in the area and where I should be looking. Not only are we looking for a quality school program (and I don’t measure it necessarily by wins and losses but by a coach, and staff, who knows his stuff and works with his kids to help them continue to develop and progress), but also for a good training facility for him to continue working with a quality pitching coach.

My son is a rising junior and a left-handed pitcher, who has yet to hit his growth spurt. He is 5’ 10” and throws in the low 80s. As a good dad, I think he has a lot of potential, so I'm looking for the place that will help him reach whatever his potential IS.

Looks to me like Keller would be your best bet. Good program and close to Westlake. Kellerdad would be able to give you the details you are wanting to know for sure. If I were you, I would PM him and ask him your questions!

Good luck and congrats on coming to God's country. You will like the area and the people. Not nicer people in the world than right here in the Metroplex.

I know a good pitching coachWink in McKinney, but it's a pretty good haul from Westlake.
obrady ~ Welcome to the area! The more the merrier!

OP is correct that Keller is a solid program. I've taught/coached in the district longer then I care to admit. Rob Stramp (KHS head coach) is a class act. He has many a trophy on his case, also one of the toughest districts in the state.

Southlake Carroll is also a top program to look into. It has a whole lot of talent, along with tradition to draw from.

Justin Northwest is an up and coming program. They hired a new coach last year (Che Hendrix, pronounced shey. He shared coach of the year honors with McKinney North's head coach.

I can offer more information on the NWHS program if you're interested. Send me a PM.

Good Luck!
Westlake has a lot of good school districts around it.

Keller High School - 5A school and perinial playoff team. Coach Stramp is a well respected coach that gets a lot out of his players.

Central High School (within Keller School District)- 4A school that moves to 5A for the first time next year. Will probably struggle the first couple of years as it moves up.

Keller Fossil Ridge - 5A team moving to 4A. Bad baseball program right now.

Northwest High School - Huge area that compromises the NWHS district, from Trophy Club in the East nearly to Decatur in the West. They also will move up to 5A next year in a very tough district.

Southlake Carroll - One of the most repected athletic programs not only in the area, but the State and country. Best football team in the country two years in a row. Top notch academics also. Coach Hughes is either loved or hated by his players and parents, but he does get results. Couple of state championships in the past few years. Get ready to get your checkbook out if you want to live in the SLC district though, as houses aren't cheap.

Colleyville Heritage - Great program with a new coach. Another expensive place to live.

Argyle - small district, great academics, great place to live, have no idea about thier baseball program.

Flower Mound - may not seem that far of a drive, but in traffic could be bad depending on what side of town you live on. They have two HS's...Flower Mound, which I highly recommend, (another perinial playoff team) and Marcus, which I wouldn't until they get another coach.

Grapevine, a great school with a bad coach. I wouldn't send my son to Grapevine, but that's just me.

Be very careful when looking for houses around Keller. A real estate agent may tell you that your son will attend such and such High School. Double check the agent. Call the school to make sure you are in their attendence boundries. Keller High School and others in the area do not take transfers from other High Schools in their school districts...period. They are overflowing and won't allow it. Otherwise, Collikar's son would be playing for Keller instead of Northwest. Big Grin

As far as pitching coaches, there are plenty around. They just opened a brand new facility in Keller but there are more popping up every day around the area.

As far as fall and summer programs, again, there are plenty around. But be prepared to drive. Most of the quality organizations are on the Dallas side of town. I wouldn't recommend any of the Ft. Worth based organizations except for the FW Cats. But again, that's just personal preference.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a PM on this site.

Jeff Harp is the assistant coach at Argyle and he's one of the good guys in HS baseball. He used to coach at one of the FM schools for many years.

If you're wanting a smaller school and atmosphere, I would highly recommend Argyle if you're going to be in that area.

Best of luck with your move and I hope everything works out well for you and your family.

KD,

Great rundown of the schools. They should be able to make a sound decision now!!

OP
Jericho Jones is doing very well.
Check out this link and it gives you a run down
on his accomplishments. He was a freshman at Louisiana Tech this past year and the awards just keep rolling in.

WOW....What a year!! Sorry about the wrong name....I knew it was something like that, but wasn't 100% sure.

Thanks for the update and it looks like he's well on his way to playing at the next level someday.
OP,
Ditto on Coach Harp he is one of the good guys and Argyle is moving up to 3A this year and will have a solid program in baseball and football.....

If commuting isn't a problem then I would look into the programs in Flower Mound as well as Lake Dallas. Flower Mound has FM Marcus and FMHS and both have strong traditions in baseball and will be competing in the district w/Coppell and Newman Smith this year....In D magazine Highland Village (which feeds into Marcus) was ranked #3 and Flower Mound (feeds into both schools but you have to watch the lines like Keller there is no movement between the 2 schools you go where you live) was #8 in their top 10 places to live.

If private school is a possibility then Liberty Christian in Argyle has a great Baseball Program and I believe finished 2nd at State the last 2 years and won state 3yrs ago....This is their 2nd year at their new location and their baseball field is the Integrity Park complex.

Keller and NW are both districts I would look into as they are both baseball strong, close to Westlake and your property value should only go up in that area. And the parents I have met on these boards that go to those schools are great so that must say something about that community.

Southlake: considered that when we moved here 12 years ago, but inspite of all the success they have in sports I wouldn't want my son(s) going to a Megaschool like that......

OP: I am sending you a PM.

obrady,

A suggestion would be to send Collikar or TBird-Dad a way to contact you as their son goes to NW and plays on the Mustangs, also I would check out the BBI website (bbidallas.org) as they list most of the area team's info. and tryout dates, check out DBAT's (dallasbat.com) website as well for tryout info./camps/lessons, the McKinney Marshal's website (mckinneymarshals.com), the Dallas Mustangs (dallasmustangsbaseball.com) and another resource is the Dallas Morning News Sports section they usually will list tryout info. when teams supply it........

WELCOME TO THE AREA and good luck to your son....
